Last Friday's #RSVPDigiEvent on the #19thC British press in non-Anglophone countries is now live on our YouTube channel! And don't forget to join us *tomorrow* for our March event featuring @triproftri.bsky.social and the Forget Me Not!

Oh boy! The TextualScholar listserve just heated up (and rightly so) on a question about editing problematic authors. First responder dismissed it out of hand, but John Bryant jumped in to set us all rightπΏπΏπΏ
congratulations!
Hey, chancellor spent $17million on that tool w/o asking faculty & then dumped it on them and said "make it so" -- meanwhile we all suffered austerity cuts in the millions on every campus. Pfftt....we (chancellor, not faculty) undermined higher ed for them. blergh
And getting faculty in the CSUs to create curriculum around (which they will gleefully pilfer w/o attribution or further payment) π‘
I've had some chats abt training an LLM on Johnson's Dictionary to ensure that all of the vernacular is picked up. Some stories/poems are in French/German/Bengali, so I wd need to eyeball those. I spent 4 months looking thru every pg of 83 vols to verify metadata. Trying to avoid that again π§ππ«€π΅
gorgeous!
For the bulk download of my @archive.org collection, which file type is best to download? See Bengal Annual archive.org/details/beng...
How to extract all 1000 engravings from 83 vols but retain vol title, year & pg # for the images corpus?

Need advice: The nxt phase of this project is creating clean OCR. I've chatted w/a few of y'all abt how to clean up the OCR, but the 1st step is where I'm stuck (1/?)

Happy to head to Daejon, South Korea this summer to present a short paper on this tiny dataset of 19c periodicals - let's see how much more work I can get done in that time so as not to disappoint #DH2026

Jacquard loom video exhibit with light projected through cards
All the hole punches from Jacquard cards on the floor
The Museum of Craft and Design had its opening gala for a new incredibly cool Video Craft exhibit that involves a lot of weaving! It was a balm for the soul. Thanks for the invite, @triproftri.bsky.social! #DHmakes sfmcd.org/exhibitions/...
What an incredible show!
Enjoyed today's #RSVPDigiEvent? Can't wait for more #19thC periodicals' chat? Our March event is just around the corner next Friday, March 6! @triproftri.bsky.social will talk to us about the "Racial Anxieties of Polite Culture in the Forget Me Not for 1825 + 1833." Register now!
@tedunderwood.com this is an incredible undertaking! We're struggling w/this on my campus, especially with all of the various languages that scholars study in every college (and, me included on my latest project about 19c literary annuals & the new corpus we created from 83 volumes). Hoorah!!
A very necessary response, but most enamored by fact that the president of a major university can name actual specific research projects undertaken by his faculty
For those vols that don't have an OCLC catalog entry for the print version, we are creating new OCLC catalog entries. We're also putting all of our metadata into Wikidata, too.
@archive.org = wonderful & allowing us to add robust metadata *not* restricted by Dublin Core.
For this project, we elected to add info to existing OCLC catalog entry for the print vol only. I looked up every OCLC catalog entry for that vol & chose the correct OCLC # matching print vol & year. These vols were pub annually for 20 yrs but OCLC doesn't distinguish proper dates in the search
From our librarian: catalogers are supposed to see if there's an existing record in OCLC and add to it instead of creating a completely new record. For instance, there's an entry for microfiche of a vol + entry for print edition of that vol + entry for Hathi Trust version.
I'm working on creating OCLC entries for these literary annuals we digitized for Internet Archive (rather, our wonderful librarian is). She recommended posting everything to Wikidata too bc of these blocks on OCLC now. Also, libraries are supposed to avoid creating new records & uploading to OCLC π€·ββοΈπ
Sabbatical Update 4: Prestige Economics in HigherΒ Ed
Prestige economics in higher education get in the way doing real work. An update from a year-long research leave about what matters most about scholarly adventures.
You busy April 9-10? There's going to be an amazing conference at Rutgers celebrating the (beta) rollout of the Black Bibliography Project database. Here's the agenda: globalracialjustice.rutgers.edu/sites/defaul...
Registration can be found here: globalracialjustice.rutgers.edu/event/networ...
ACH is holding our annual virtual conference, ACH 2026, from June 24 to 26, 2026. We are excited to announce that we have extended our call for papers to February 23, 2026: buff.ly/Rltfrcu
You know I'm wildly in agreement with all of this!
What did I miss? An article? Head down of late trying to figure out (once again) how to do DH as a 1-woman team (super fun, but dang, so much work!)
10:17pm: Completed metadata for 82 vols, literary annuals. Ready to convert into MARC XML files. Bulk upload to @archive.org imminent.

Just picked up some polenta to have with my shrimp in red sauce. So good!
Also, made chili last night and corn bread in an iron skillet today.
Freezing meals for one so I'm not tempted to do the convenient, easy thing and eat shitty fast food...mmmm....so much better!
Wish I could be there! (Why is teleportation not a thing yet?!)
Hope it's terrific!
