A Brief Survey of Concerns Expressed by the Films of 2025 - Reactor A closer look at the varied films of 2025, and what they have to say about our shared humanity...

(just barely) in time for the Oscars, I've teased out some of the common themes and worries that popped up in the movies of 2025.

I'll admit that when I hit play on Happy Gilmore 2 I wasn't expecting to put it in conversation with No Other Choice, but here we are.

"There is a channel where an old sea-god swims
on translucent wings
five miles down in deep unflowered
midnight where it snows and heaps up salt
this goblin-god with ghost-grace frictionlessly
moves
or hangs like a pickled heart in the sea-jar

nothing I say sinks down that far"

Facebook post by Nekima Levy Armstrong:

"Friends, A Breaking News headline just appeared in the Star Tribune, claiming that the national Target boycott ended today. This is false. The writer of the story, Carson Hartzog, is fully aware that the Target boycott was launched in Minneapolis on February 1, 2025. I have spoken to her several times since then, yet she failed to reach out to me, Jaylani Hussein, or Monique Cullars Doty, the three founders of the national Target boycott for the story. Carson even used the photo from our press conference that includes my daughter, Assata Joy and Ms. Rosemary Nevils, an elder in our community, to try to add legitimacy to a bogus story.
I am once again disgusted by the Star Tribune and their attempts to minimize and erase the voices of our community.
The nationwide Target Boycott is not over, unless and until Target reverses its decision to rollback Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, as we said from the beginning. β€œPastor” Jamal Bryant does not speak for us or our community and has zero authority to end the nationwide boycott of Target, a company that is headquartered in Minneapolis.
Please don’t believe the hype and these attempts to rescue Target from the effects of capitulating to the Trump Administration. Target rolled back DEI because of Donald Trump. They donated $1 million to the Trump/Vance inauguration committee. Target also allowed ICE to stage in its parking lots during Operation Metro Surge.
The nationwide boycott of Target is successful and it will continue. Please continue to shop elsewhere."

'AI Is African Intelligence': The Workers Who Train AI Are Fighting Back Kenyan workers are still the underpaid labor behind AI training, moderation, and sex chatbots. The Data Labelers Association is fighting back.

I met with AI data labelers in Kenya who are organizing their colleagues to fight the brutal working conditions and horrible pay given to the workers at the "bottom of the AI supply chain." They believe the NDAs they've signed are unenforceable so are speaking out:

that said, I think maintaining a boundary between writing as magical craft and writing as art for purely personal motivations can be useful, to help in grounding after the big stuff, but that's a matter of discernment for the craftsperson themself rather than a rule

I think this might be on to something, and I suspect it lurks behind Labour’s current rhetoric of β€œtough choices.” A leader is the one who’s willing to hurt others for the greater good. So if you’re not hurting someone… you’re not a leader?

Increasingly of the opinion that the correct answer to the Trolley Problem is "fuck you, why are you so fixated on finding reasons to justify killing people?"

Two pairs of beavers released in Cornwall by wildlife trust Wildlife experts say the release is a "landmark" for nature recovering in Cornwall and nationally.

Enjoy a full minute of beavers being released into the wild in Cornwall. These little fluffbutts are the first to swim in these waters in a very, very long time - the last official records of beavers in the wild in England are from the 1300s. BBC buff.ly/BnMwCOx
