Report: Bridging the gap between climate concern and climate action. ClimateXChange

New report πŸ“š

Focusing on installing a heat pump, switching to an EV, and using public transport more than driving, this report looks at how people respond to different communications to prompt them to take the first steps toward climate action.

I'm aware of the differences :)

And I'm aware of the dynamics involved in the primaries and the functions of capital and power in those processes.

As are you, clearly.

"Earn my vote" was poor shorthand.

11.03.2026 10:23 πŸ‘ 0 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 0 πŸ“Œ 0

I'm not advocating either of those positions btw.

I'm demonstrating how easy it is to refute the false dichotomy those deploying the problem are usually seeking to create.

Or what if your analysis is: the Ds are about 80% as bad as the Rs and the Rs are fucking mental. I believe the best way to get the Ds to be only 50% as bad as the Rs is to withhold my vote so they know it must be earned.

So the TP is not a really reasonable framework even in this scenario, is it

11.03.2026 10:16 πŸ‘ 0 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

OK, we're talking about the TP deployed to persuade or bully ppl to vote Dem in US elections.

Using your example: what if you don't vote AND are highly active during those other 1460 days?

Is that morally superior to voting and being inactive the rest of the term?

11.03.2026 10:09 πŸ‘ 0 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 0 πŸ“Œ 0

Perhaps not literally (I dunno, maybe they are?) but the utilitarianism that is almost always the takeaway lesson when the TP is taught or deployed is the common justification for the harm caused while "avoiding greater harm".

That's the framing of ICE raids, right?

11.03.2026 10:00 πŸ‘ 1 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 0 πŸ“Œ 0

This is such a great tool for teaching power. Nearly everyone knows the TP and the feeling of being made to wrestle with it, often as children. And we ALL have to face horrible choices as adults.

What we're never allowed to do is question the situation itself. That's called having a tantrum.

11.03.2026 09:55 πŸ‘ 0 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 0 πŸ“Œ 0

"You/we *must* do one of these two horrible things and if you choose the one I don't like you're a child/monster" has been the constant and increasingly hysterical political framing of the last few decades.

As you say, people are tired.

11.03.2026 09:49 πŸ‘ 0 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

I kinda feel like you're being made to contemplate something that challenges your priors and your response is...

11.03.2026 09:34 πŸ‘ 0 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 0 πŸ“Œ 0

Well #1 you are (deliberately?) feigning outrage at the hyperbole being deployed for effect.

Do you literally think anyone who questions the use of the trolley problem in public debate is a child who should be banned from public debate?

#2 you're trying to entirely decontextualise the critique

11.03.2026 09:31 πŸ‘ 0 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

Am I missing some context?

He's questioning the premise and wondering at the overeliance on this thought experiment.

There isn't a denial there of the occasional need to make difficult or even impossible choices either.

11.03.2026 08:37 πŸ‘ 0 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

I have lots of thoughts on this, but first off: saying people who question the premise of the scenario "shouldn't be allowed to participate in public discourse" looks like the real tantrum here I'm afraid.

11.03.2026 08:19 πŸ‘ 1 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

Should have said "can't see the Tony for the tone"

Proud of that line all the same!

09.03.2026 23:10 πŸ‘ 1 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 0 πŸ“Œ 0

*attempt* to self correct I should say

09.03.2026 23:06 πŸ‘ 0 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 0 πŸ“Œ 0

The system is going to self correct soon I think, and this period will be pretty thoroughly memory holed by those in/with power.

As we've learned in the UK, though, a sizeable chunk of the public have functioning eyes, ears and memories and so the memory-holing is likely to backfire badly

OK, this is wild.

In September 2023, geophysicists across the world started monitoring a very odd signal coming from the ground under them.

It was picked up in the Arctic. And Antarctica. It was detected everywhere, every 90 seconds, as regular as a metronome, for *nine days*.

What the HELL?

But he's privately educated and dresses appropriately and is polite and has good hand gestures and knows the right people and what are you saying that I'm so obsessed with norms over behaviour that I'm missing the Tony for the tone?

The most basic understanding of false economies was all that was required to see how unbelievably dumb austerity was from an economic perspective.

Of course the goals were never really economic.

Radicalisation pipeline:

Ambitious people jumped on AI early/ hard

Hard to admit they were overzealous/gullible. Ego/careers/grifts are impacted. Not good.

OpenAi deal w Pentagon was a chance to offload their internal doubt.
Switch to magical "ethical" Cluade!

Now they're all in. Rogan style.

Just one more austerity bro. Just one more war. Trust me bro, just need one more attack on minorities bro and the left will be crushed. One more bro just trust me bro.

I saw the preview of The Trials @trontheatre.bsky.social last night. It’s superb. In the near future, child survivors of climate collapse are judging which adults complicit in the disaster should be executed. I shivered at the writer’s fate. It’s like watching our entire generation on trial. See it.

I get yelled at for saying this but for many hundreds of years people went to university not to get diplomas or be employable but because immersion in the humanities was considered foundational to a good life, and school must return to its original purpose: the joy of learning.

Eunice Newton Foote: The woman who discovered the greenhouse effect In research presented in 1856, Eunice Newton Foote described how tubes of gas heated when exposed to sunlight, but the significance of her work was not appreciated

Eunice Newton Foote was the first to identify the warming effect of greenhouse gases, more than 2 years before Tyndall. If we’d listened…

I live in Sweden. It dropped to -24Β°C in my, ahem, "village" this winter.

Every single house is running a heatpump.

They're magic.

Yes! Labour is absolutely actively and aggressively anti-trans, far more so than the previous government in terms of policies and rhetoric.
For example:
🚨 Made puberty blockers ban permanent
🚨Covered up increase in suicides of trans young people
🚨 Reimplemented Section 28 for trans individuals.

08.03.2026 07:33 πŸ‘ 215 πŸ” 46 πŸ’¬ 4 πŸ“Œ 0

This is so so key. You really can't get the whole anti-human "chatbots are just as conscious as I am" bullshit without radical mind-body dualism that gets you forgetting that feelings are in the body and also an inseparable part of your thinking consciousness.
Kill the Cartesian in your head.

Thank you! At an event last night I said "If the word hope doesn't work for you try, 'Never fucking surrender.'" The word hope seems too sunny to a lot of people, but the heart of it as I'm interested in it is: we make the future in the present, if we show up, and that never surrender part.

07.03.2026 15:43 πŸ‘ 675 πŸ” 208 πŸ’¬ 21 πŸ“Œ 25

My dude. We are saying the same thing.

Polanski in this thread is just shorthand for "someone with less baggage and better able to manage the media". Given Corbyn's weakness there and what he was up against the man moved mountains. 40%!

Gonna mute this now. Enjoy the weekend 😊

07.03.2026 13:56 πŸ‘ 1 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

I appreciate this happens, but it is very clearly not what I am doing here.

Please have a re-read :)

07.03.2026 13:18 πŸ‘ 0 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

Yeah I agree with this. I think marginally better might have won the election though.

Corbyn got 40% of the vote to May's 42%.

Many of us have memory holed this.

I also think absolute hellfire would have been unleashed and that the government would not have survived very long.
