Why they were done this way, I'm not sure. It may be so they can do that 'fall apart into rubble' thing when they die. Or it may be so they could enable special movements in the days before models had better physics code. ๐คทโโ๏ธ
The reason is the stingers aren't actually part of the model but are added through extra effects. The newer appearances were modified so those effects are retained.

One thing I haven't called enough attention to is that (almost all) crystal scorpids in Voidstorm retain their stingers when tamed!
Earlier NPCs of this model lose their stingers on taming but hopefully they'll be updated to match.
Sadly, none of the fixed ones are red but there are blue & green.

It really does look better that way. More magical, and more like what we saw of the Haranir in that TWW trailer. Though maybe more light makes sense, for all the plant life thriving there. But at the very least they could have added light/dark cycles to give that feeling for half the time.
