"THE TRUTH WE CAN'T TELL EACH OTHER IS THAT GRIEF IS A MUTATION. WHEN YOU LOSE SOMEONE, YOU WILL BEAR THIS WOUND FOREVER. YOU WILL BE MOURNING UNTIL THE END OF YOUR DAYS. IT CHANGES YOUR STATE OF BEING IN THE WORLD."
- JULIA DUCOURNAU -
I know a lot of you think editing a horror magazine is all fun and games, but sometimes youβll just be proofreading an article by a top-notch interviewer like @isaacfeldberg.bsky.social and get smacked in the face with a quote that will stay with you forever.

can't remember whether I've ever shared my interview with James Mangold from 2017 here, one of two interviews I've ever done in my career - I (incorrectly) assumed I should only ask about Logan but snuck in some Cop Land questions

James Mangold says a Cop Land 4K is "in the works" and if it turns out any of the boutique blu-ray distributors I work with are doing it without letting me contribute an essay, I will be crushed

I did watch a version where the subs are something like "go fuck yourself" which is more disappointing imho

it should be "masturbate in hell" but tragically it's "masturbate in heck!" in this version

Having a teary cup of tea about this today. It delights and stuns me to see this kind of thoughtful writing about something my dad had a hand in bringing to life. The art we make keeps moving through the world, even after weβre gone. It can be silly and meaningful all at once.

this may have also made me teary - it means so much to me that you read this! Highlander is what every genre movie should aspire to be: goofy and fun on the surface, but not without intelligence, substance, and soul. It's a very meaningful movie to me, and I'm far from alone in feeling that way.

yes! not sure which is my favorite - either the transition between Connor's aquarium to the Scottish loch, or the Connor-to-Mona-Lisa dissolve

yeah! I watched some of it as a kid in the '90s and had no idea who anyone was, so the guest stars shocked me this time around - Ron Perlman, Wes Studi, Vincent Schiavelli, some real heavy-hitters. Banks is among my favorites, too.

Connor MacLeod/"Russell Nash" and Brenda (his love interest/sword expert/forensic investigator) in a backlit bar
Connor running down a steamy, blue-tinted, backlit alleyway
misty, almost heavenly backlighting in Connor's antique shop, with Connor and Rachel (his assistant/adopted daughter) in the center of the shot, framed by 2 angel statues
the Kurgan at the end of another foggy alleyway, silhouetted, holding a big-ass sword
bringing my Highlander obsession over to bluesky with a cinematography appreciation post. the backlighting, the fog - just a gorgeous film. wish movies still looked like this.

rewatched the series a few years ago, and it isn't always great, but it's consistently fun and introduces cool shit into the Highlander universe, like the Dark Quickening, Methos, the Watchers (mortal secret archivists of the Immortals). might import the big twitter thread I wrote about it sometime.

Japanese program cover with black background, black & yellow city skyline at the bottom, a big white semicircular glow above it and a column of sky blue on top of that, which reaches vertically to the top of the program - w/Japanese text in orange and red (a rendering of the Quickening, maybe). at the top, it says HIGHLANDER in white font, and below that, in smaller font, it reads "There can be only one"
...I may have also picked up this Japanese Highlander program a few months back

I love that sense of fun, and to me all the imperfections of Highlander are a feature not a bug - e.g. that no one's bothering to hide their accents, that Lambert is too blind for swordfighting. it's just so idiosyncratic, textured, and human in ways that don't feel like they're allowed anymore

there's so much bad in the world but there's also people who lift up and carry an elderly bat around every day so he can pretend he's flying again, and that's the part of the world I think is worth fighting for

polygon article "celebrating" the 40th anniversary of Highlander by taking a dump on it: "For its 40th anniversary, a look back at the self-serious slog that is 1986's Highlander"
in the past few years I've lost loved ones: friends, an ex, my dog. Highlander helped me through it, and its goofiness is exactly what made it perfect for that purpose - watching movies that confront grief head on would've felt too raw. anyway whoever cooked this shit up can go fuck themselves lol
