1) Today is #InternationalWomensDay. What is a simple government policy that would contribute to increasing the economic and social power of women in contemporary society? Decent and affordable daycare for children. Women still carry a disproportionate burden of domestic labor. A thread from Sweden.
8) If you think things like subsidized daycare are destroying Swedish economy? Bullshit. Sweden remains one of wealthiest nations w/a robust economy. If anything, benefits like subsidized daycare have made it possible, creating secure, healthy workforce. Not having it is anti-family.
7) Bottom line: subsidized daycare benefits families in general, women in particular. It makes for more secure population. Women can re-enter workforce sooner and men can take larger part of domestic labor without the excuse of lost income. Affordable daycare is a feminist issue.
6) Subsidized, cheap daycare in Sweden disproportionately benefits women otherwise professionally/economically punished for having kids. AND encourages men to take larger role in unpaid domestic labor. Of course, these are probably reasons why many men don’t want such subsidies.
5) What about once school starts? Also covered. In Sweden, there’s also subsidized pre- & after-school care that you can use up to age 13 where you can drop off kids early (before school starts) and pick up late. Kids supervised and get a snack. Cost? €100 ($110) per month.
4) So, you make €3k ($3.3K)/month. 3 kids in daycare costs just €180/month. But, in Sweden govt also gives you money just for having kids. ALL families w/3 kids gets €400/month from govt. So, in the end, would be childcare fully covered w/€220 ($240) left over. There’s more.
3) For Swedish families NOT among highest earners cost of full-time daycare is max 3% of monthly income for 1st child, 2% for 2nd, 1% for 3rd. So, household making €3000 ($3300)/month would pay total €180 ($195)/month for full-time daycare for 3 kids. That’s 6% of income.
2) In Sweden, 40hrs/week daycare (age 1-6) costs HIGHEST earners MAX €150 ($160)/month for 1st child, €100 2nd, €50 3rd. So, richest families w/3 kids in daycare won't pay more than €300 ($330)/month. Means-tested, so most pay less & never more than 3% of your monthly income.
