Citizen scientists are spotting more and more rare frogs on private land
Threatened frogs arenβt just found in national parks β citizen scientists are finding them throughout private land too.
We love citizen science! The Australian Museum's FrogID project is testament to the power of community in environmental monitoring. In just 7 years 92% of frog species were recorded by citizen science in NSW. πΈ

Murray-Darling Basin stoush looms over more water buybacks
More water rights in the Murray-Darling Basin will be purchased from farmers and irrigators in a renewed push by the federal government to return 450 gigalitres of water to the environment.
Minister Watt has flagged that the federal government is considering purchasing water from the northern part of the basin for the first time. However, unless NSW water rules provide enough basic flows at the right time, that water won't get far.

Minns admits mining and power projects can be fast-tracked under contentious NSW approval laws
Premier has been spruiking to business how changes will facilitate investment in major projects in NSW
Looks like the only ones consulted about the Minns Government's new planning laws were the miners and the developer's lobby.
The laws look set to pass next time Parliament sits β a gift to big business just in time for Christmas.

The not-so-little Murray cod that could: fish tracked swimming 900km along Australiaβs biggest river system
Fish named after Olympic swimming champion Ariarne Titmus was most recently tracked at a section of the mid-Murray, near Belsar Island
Check out this Murray Cod's mighty marathon!
Like Golden Perch, Murray-Cod need to be able to swim hundreds of kms as they seek new breeding territory and food sources. Unfortunately, humans have made that very hard by building thousands of dams and weirs.

Platypus vanish from river where Charles Darwin pondered evolution
Almost 190 years on, in the place where Charles Darwin first spotted a platypus, the egg-laying mammal seems to have disappeared.
"There are no platypus in that section of the Cox's now because it is heavily polluted with salt and other metal pollutants" β Professor Ian Wright

Energy company Verdant Earth Technologies plans to use the long-mothballed Redbank Power Station near Singleton to burn native vegetation to produce energy. Up to 850,000 tonnes of biomass would be burnt each year - material that will be sourced from land clearing and potentially native forests.

Alarmingly, the fastest growing segment of threatened animals is those which are critically endangered, which grew by 35 species over the same period. This is a stark indicator of the worsening biodiversity crisis, and shows current settings to protect endangered species are not working.
