As a teenager, I thought Tanis’s journey as a half-elf was so heavy. Like you said, probably wouldn’t hit the same 40yrs later but I loved that series and the world Weis and Hickman built.

Had I known in 2009 that there'd be a dozen Sandman Slim novels (& a 13th on the way), I wouldn't have started them. I'm glad I didn't know, b/c the redemption arc of this character is long but compelling & worth it.
Read the 1st book. It's not an appetizer; it's a full meal. But you'll want more.
