Musicology Conference Sound Bleed time #sam2026
it is a SKILL to query an author in a way that makes them laugh and make the revision. it is a SKILL to take good care of a manuscript. a fucking machine will never care about you! it will not edit with consideration or grace!
That's actually what got me to go to this same conference in 2023 even though I was nervous about traveling post-2020 - I got to see Gaelynn Lea do a concert and a talk as part of the conference. π€―π€©
In my (fortunately) limited experience, what makes me want to fling my laptop out the window is that it's *relentless* with the "not x. not y. just z." and the short lines with soft returns and shit, and really dealing with that would be out of scope for copyediting, so ????
Oof!!
sliding bathroom door reminding me to be grateful that I'm past my "four grad students to a hotel room" conferencegoing era
The sun seen through a train window.
My "I'm only going to conferences if I can take the train" resolution is off to a good start - delayed by like half an hour (on top of the scheduled departure time being changed from 1:03 to 2:45 a month ago), but still better than flying!
hang in there, it's supposed to snow tomorrow (?????)
I've had a few universities try to get me to accept a payment method with a processing fee, but there were other options. I accept credit cards when clients are paying out of pocket, but not having a fee is supposed to be the trade-off for taking months to get paid. π©

Result! Just received from Grammarly:

But, hell, "oligarchic institutional rot and elite capture have left this society vulnerable to exploitation by Actual Evil Wizards who want to do Actual Evil Wizard Things" is a better political analysis than 95% of what I see running around out there, on the internet or off it
When I was deep in the dissertation-writing cave, I was getting ready to go for a walk, put my glasses on my chair for some reason?? and then SAT DOWN. I took it as a sign from the universe that I was way overdue for an eye exam.
Pretty crazy how important the blockade of a trade route is right now
I finally lost my shit about so-called AIs, LLMs, enshittification & everything fucking evil that @officialgrammarly.bsky.social is doing. I'm fucking furious, and not just about what 1 company has done. An open letter to Grammarly & the rest of the LLM hype machine www.moryan.com/an-open-lett...
A filthy pile of snow the length of several parking spaces.
I sort of wanted to touch one of the suburban grocery store parking lot ones to see if it felt cold or not, but I figured I would probably get a disease
Yeah, I don't like that people are getting the idea in their heads that good client communication is too hard, gotta have the computer fix my wrong and bad words, the computer will know what to do, not me, it's too hard. It's a skill you can work on!!
Yesterday I sent an email to one of my clients that was like "i like D&d too lmao"
Help DOZENS of students in Gaza City access fundamental rights: education & internet.

this sounds like more work than just writing a non-mean email in the first place Β―\_(γ)_/Β―
are we sure the piano is for a home and not to be dropped on someone looney tunes style
Musicology friends: I'll be at SAM this week (arriving Wednesday night, leaving Saturday afternoon), so if you'll be there and want to talk to me about editing or indexing, let me know!
so many otherwise good textbooks now only make half-sense because the cheapskate publishers let the website registrations lapse, one I saw a few years ago had been turned into a shady casino site?
This is so cursed for so many reasons. π I can hardly look at my senior portrait from college (2008) because they airbrushed my face too much and made it look like I knew about the concept of lip gloss; I don't want to know what the computer thinks I should look like.
This. My university keeps wanting me to make a βsyllabot,β an LLM-based chatbot my students can query about the syllabus. And all I can think about is all the resources being consumed so no one has to use Ctrl+F.
"LLMs simply don't make mistakes like the ones you see here in this passage from Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy" is jokerizing
An opinion that makes you a fringe radical in this country is that the life of a person who is not an American citizen is not an abstraction, and is worth just as much as that of an American citizen
Just walked by a colleague's classroom after my class finished and he was talking about Elvis, getting blank stares and so he had to ask "Does anyone know who Elvis Presley is?"
It's rough out here on these teaching streets.
everyone wants to see trump's administration be punished for their crimes and tbh being forced to spend the whole day in shoes two sizes too big for their feet isn't a bad start.
