Are the Who tracks live versions or studio? They rather dominate the set. Could it have been cut for a radio show given the mix of artists?

Cheers for the tip, I’ve not lunched with the devil lately but will take a peek
His pop criticism for Let it Rock and Creem is outstanding. He was among the best commentators of the scene in the early 70s. Took me years to make the connection between him and Fred!
I found it fascinating to track writers at NME and MM to see how they developed their ideas and positions.A million miles from my favourite pop critics Nik Cohn and Penny Valentine but Simon Frith came close and so too Duncan Fallowell who is just a fabulous critic
Thank you once more. Researching the book was a true labour of love

Thank you for the thumbs up, it has made my day. So pleased you enjoyed the book. I hadn’t thought about getting Patti Smith in but wish I had made space for Laura Nyro’s Gonna Take A Miracle, an album I only discovered after I finished the book
Will Straw’s 'Nights in Fairyland: Gossip, Blackmail, and the Many Lives of “Broadway Brevities”' (2026) is a neon lit history of New York’s pre-war sensationalist press and the lurid exposé of queer nightspots and lifestyles. Essential @wstraw.bsky.social

a recent find among my mum's photos. The scene is the common room, Maria Grey teacher training college, Twickenham, c.1954. Two years later the college's students would be raving on Eel Pie Island just over the bridge

To mark my survey in Ugly Things #69 of the 1973 debates in the British press about the relative merits of THEM and Van Morrison, I've put on my blog the full text of Lester Bangs’ sleeve notes www.peterstanfield.com/blog #lesterbangs #them #vanmorrison
