Just finished reading @peterbeinart.bsky.social new book. I feel like buying 50 copies and just handing them out for free at my synagogue. It’s such an important contribution to how Jewish life and self-understanding needs to change. I can’t recommend it more highly.
Hard to see how the ceasefire and the second phase of talks can progress given the positions made by Trump and Netanyahu.
I think it’s safe to say that the 2-State solution is now officially dead. Tonight has been an extraordinary news conference from the White House. Historic in all the worst ways.
Meanwhile, we are also hearing from the White House that a normalisation agreement with Saudi Arabia will not be contingent on the promise of a Palestinian state. That clears the way for West Bank annexation. Tragically, the worse case scenarios are beginning to play out. 3/3
At the same time Trumps’s description of Gaza as unliveable and “a big pile of rubble” contradicts the Israeli narrative of self-defence and proportionality in its ‘war’ against Hamas. 2/3
President Trump is presenting the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians in Gaza as driven by a humanitarian concern. The Western democracies will no doubt go along with this ruse of righteousness. 1/3
