Geological Society announces recipients of 2026 Medals, Awards and Funds | The Geological Society of London

I don’t have words to express how honoured I am to be receiving the President’s Award from @geolsoc.bsky.social.
It reflects the support, insights, and lessons gifted to me by so many people, so I want this to be an opprtunity to thank them…for everything ✨

The news about students seeking compensation from universities for COVID teaching has made me quite sad.

I can't say what happened at those universities, or what those student's experience was. My present university did not appear to be in the list.

But what I can say is...

β€œThis job is an immense privilege” - GEOSCIENTIST Dr Alice Paine is a palaeoclimatology and volcanology postdoctoral researcher at UniversitΓ€t Basel, Switzerland.

I recently had the pleasure of being interviewed by Geoscientist Magazine as part of their "Five Minutes With..." series, chatting about my recent projects, and reflections on science more broadly.
You can access the full interview available here:

Join us next Wednesday (4th Feb) at 19:00 (UK time) for a webinar by Dr. Alice Paine @alicerpaine.bsky.social

In this talk we’ll look at whether very large eruptions can be treated as scaled up versions of moderate volume historical eruptions or whether they should be treated as fundamentally...

Greenland is rich in natural resources – a geologist explains why Greenland’s rare earth element deposits may be among the world’s largest by volume.

I appreciate this from @us.theconversation.com by Jonathan Paul.

However, I think it’s making a mistake I commonly hear geologists make with regards to current events.

I have a hunch that this mistake is one of the reasons geology programs are struggling πŸ§΅πŸ› οΈπŸͺ¨πŸ§ͺ

An explosive #eruption of Hayli Gubbi #volcano, located SE of Erta'Ale in the Afar Rift (Ethiopia), began at ~08:30 UTC on Nov 23. Eruption onset was fortuitously captured by a @planet.com overpass at 08:31 UTC. Hayli Gubbi has no record of Holocene eruptions. Toulouse VAAC reporting ash to ~15 km.

Mercury (Hg) is a toxic metal released into the atmosphere as a result of natural processes and more recently by human
