There is one place, however, where Musk, with the help of his minions, achieved his goals. He did indeed shred U.S.A.I.D. Though a rump operation is now operating inside the State Department, the administration says that it has terminated more than 80 percent of U.S.A.I.D. grants. Brooke Nichols, an associate professor of global health at Boston University, has estimated that these cuts have already resulted in about 300,000 deaths, most of them of children, and will most likely lead to significantly more by the end of the year. That is what Musk’s foray into politics accomplished.
Musk should be asked about this in every interview he does now and forever. To ignore it is a dereliction of duty.

Undocumented immigrants paid hundreds of billions of dollars in taxes over the last 10 years — while 6 tech giants dodged $278 billion while raking in tax breaks and government contracts.
But somehow immigrants are the problem.
A tricky thing about modern society is that no one has any idea when they don’t die.
Like, the number of lives saved by controlling air pollution in America is probably over 200,000 per year, but the number of people who think their life was saved by controlling air pollution is zero.
The kicker of Mahmoud Khalil's new letter from ICE detention:
Cory Booker as he breaks Strom Thurmond's speaking record: "I'm not here because of his speech. I'm here despite his speech. I'm here because as powerful as he was, the people are more powerful."
Wow that looks so cozy and inviting. Beautiful.

These are bold and wild allegations from the FBI, which is moving to criminalize organizations like Habitat for Humanity for receiving grants from the EPA.
In a court filing, Citibank disclosed that it had been directed by the FBI to freeze the bank accounts of these groups.

"Most of EPA’s work happens behind the scenes, like when one of its enforcement teams raided a warehouse in Colorado full of mislabeled oil barrels that had been prepared for a landfill and discovered they contained nuclear waste..."

Rubio terminated 5800 USAID contracts – more than 90% of its foreign aid programs – in defiance of the courts.
Here’s a list of just some of the lifesaving awards that were terminated. Nearly all were Congressionally mandated. They’ve saved millions of lives. 🧵
Truly horrifying
House Rs just passed the budget resolution, the first step in their process to enact a bill that'd kick millions off Medicaid & cut SNAP down to just $1.60 per person per meal on avg while cutting taxes for the top 0.1% by $278k - all while increasing the debt

Black history is being erased in real time. As our leaders seek to minimize the contributions of Black people, HillmanTok creators say their open enrollment is an invitation to learn about Black history and other valuable subjects in the community.

History buffs will know that every authoritarian leader eventually converges on some version of: "I *am* the state. I can not break the law, I am the law, the law is instantiated in me."
Our march to authoritarianism so far has been excruciatingly by-the-book. Hitting every beat. No surprises.
So someone asked me to retell the story of the old lady that told me about killing her husband. Are we ready for a trip back in time to 1999? Some of you already know this story, but if you don't it is a wild ride. Apply all appropriate trigger warnings!
I keep thinking about how the vast majority of Americans, especially ones who live relatively comfortable lives, have long been careless with democracy...not necessarily hostile to it, just careless about it as if it's a hardy house plant that'll be fine even if they forget to pay attention to it.
You have questions. Mostly of the "What Can I Do to Resist This Coup?" variety. Choose Democracy has answers. Here's a really handy guide to the how/what/why of organizing... Share widely. Link here: choosedemocracy.us/what-can-i-do/
