The heart of the novel is Nayeli, Fridaโ€™s cook.

Her wit, growth, and strength carry the story. Through her, we see Fridaโ€™s world while also following her granddaughter years later as she discovers a hidden painting and long-buried family secrets related to who Frida actually was to her grandma.

Amari is growing into herself as a young person learning how to make hard choices when there are no easy answers.

The lessons in this MG series are clear without being simplistic: bravery isnโ€™t loud heroics. Bravery is choosing integrity, compassion, and courage when the world feels uncertain.

March is Social Work Month ๐Ÿ’œ

Social workers show up in community every day holding space.

One thing I love about our field is that many social workers also write translating what we witness in practice into books that help others understand trauma, healing, and the complexity of being human.

๐ŸŽ‰ Happy Book Birthday x2

Two different journeys. One truth: purpose doesnโ€™t shout, it calls.

Today Iโ€™m celebrating The Voice in My Head Is God by 2 Chainz & Heartland by Keith Oโ€™Brien. Both are stories about men who almost slipped away from their calling, & the community that pulled them back.

If we want different outcomes, we need different words & if we want different words, we need different imaginations disciplined by ethics.

Felix invites us to sit at the uneasy intersection of poetry and politics. Politics may be a game. Poetry may be a craft. But both shape how we govern our lives

Our March bookclub is a celebration of female friendship in your 20s and all the shenanigans that ensue.

Thirst Trap is giving HBO girls.

In our space, we wonโ€™t just talk about the drama.

Weโ€™ll explore what it means to evolve in community while hoping that your bonds can survive the changes.

โ€œBlack women are not simply casualties; we are the target.โ€ ๐Ÿ˜ฎโ€๐Ÿ’จ๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿพ

Tiffany D. Cross wrote a book we all need. We know we are tired but itโ€™s bigger than the goal post constantly being moved. She breaks down the roots of why. Pub Date: May 5th

Weโ€™ve been handed a version of Olโ€™ Dirty Bastard that makes him the punchline.

The wild one.

The unstable one.

The cautionary tale.

This book pushes back on that & slows the narrative down and asks who benefits when a Black man is labeled โ€œcrazyโ€ instead of contextualized.

I am always reminding families: literacy is not a moral issue. Jamesโ€™ story is a testament to what can happen when someone decides itโ€™s not too late to begin again.

โ€œItโ€™s always easier to play the sport when youโ€™ve got fans in the bleachers.โ€

May this book be that fan for someone who needs it.

Our collective grief can overwhelm us.

This book doesnโ€™t let it swallow us it names & contextualizes it. It insists that we need writers who refuse amnesia. Writers who document. Writers who tell the truth even when it costs something.

And now, I find myself excited to read El Akkadโ€™s fiction.

Thank you Brett and Kate for creating such an intentional space for readers to gather. Springfield has something special on Albany St.

Please continue to support small, independent businesses like Rumspringa & The Urban Food Brood. They are building culture, not just commerce. And we need them.

On my nightstand: The People Can Fly by Joshua Bennett. This book asks a simple but powerful question:

What does it cost to be called โ€œgiftedโ€ in America: especially if youโ€™re Black?

Bennett writes about growing up as a โ€œpromisingโ€ Black boy and how that praise can sometimes feel like pressure.

For those of us in practice & making appearances for book talks- we donโ€™t invite clients for ethical reasons.

Iโ€™ve had clients pull up on me by surprise (and I love that!) but your therapy session is about you, not me. I wouldnโ€™t initiate a convo about an event unless a client brings it up.

This wasnโ€™t an easy read. But it was necessary.

Reshona Landfair takes her name back & writes directly to us reminding us that abuse doesnโ€™t happen in isolation. It happens when communities look away and powerful men are protected.

Healing starts with naming names. This memoir is so brave!

Rev Jesse Jackson ๐Ÿ•Š๏ธ
RIP to a freedom fighter, bridge builder, and relentless believer in the dignity of Black life.

His historic presidential run in the 1980s expanded who felt seen in American politics.

If you want to understand his impact I recommend this book.

Healing, James Baldwinโ€™s work reminds us, begins when we narrate our story without hiding from its contradictions.

Thatโ€™s why this connects so deeply to my Healing Starts with a Story Black History Month campaign.

Campaign ends February 20th. Get your merch 2day!

โ€œThis laughterโ€”this pure unadulterated laughter that blooms inside the cultural camaraderie of Black girlsโ€”keeps us alive. It doesnโ€™t always look like hand-clapping games anymore, but we know it when we feel it. It always feels like this. I wish I could always feel like this.โ€Austin Channing Brown
