My favourite book is one I haven’t read yet. I'm obsessed with the tiny plants that grow in sidewalk cracks. This topic never became my main research area, but I've done a few projects here and there. While I was participating in an urban plant project in a suburb west of Tokyo, I learned that a Japanese scientist Hirokazu Tsukaya (塚谷裕一) had written an entire book documenting the flora of cracks.

“He’s making us identify frickin’ sticks!” The joys of winter botany. For years, I taught undergraduate courses on botany, plant identification and ecology. Our fall teaching semester went from September to early December. Where I live in Nova Scotia we have a late fall, so there was still a good deal to explore plant-wise in our outdoor lab sessions as late as October. We would visit different habitats with distinct vegetation, provided that we could get there and back within the three-hour timeslot allocated to our labs. Even in November...

The ice is beautiful but what I like best about this stream is the clarity of the water. No erosion and soil loss in this highly urbanized park

I felt like making some art last night/today and could have made something beautiful and/or meaningful but I made this instead.

It's a Barbie Yaga Malibu Dream Hut.

No regrets. Can't defeat fascism without joy.

When I was a professor, I once bought an entire box of Gathering Moss and every graduate student received a copy when they defended their thesis. To me, this book represents the epitome of scientific communication for a general audience.

I love seeing them at our feeders and suet block. Despite their reputation, they are only there from time to time and seem to share with all the other species.

💧 Halifax Water rates finalized. Residential bills to rise 12.1% in Jan 2026 and 6% in Apr 2026. Average +$9.28/month in January and +$5.11 in April. Increases driven by inflation, aging infrastructure and system growth.

Canada won't because a) Carney is all in on digital asbestos, and b) his former firm Brookfield was a major investor in helping Musk buy Twitter.
