I don't think people talk about the vengeance trilogy + the handmaiden + decision to leave + no other choice as a Scorsese esque run but they should.
@grattanaikins
I'm in Dublin most of the time, the rest of the time I'm in hell. I make and shitpost about films, I shitpost about but do not make music. grattanaikins.com.

That's right.
the main reason irish people are thriving in hollywood so much rn is because they overcorrect the issue of iphone face
When I went to see them a few years back, I snuck into the music equipment store during my lunch break that day to get earplugs and the moment I asked where the store had them the lad I asked, without hesitation, said "you're going to Sunn O))) right?"
You see that with a lot of expats from Venezuela (Cuba as well), just an deranged anti regime politics. I went to college with a really right wing Venezuelan guy and often found myself arguing with him because he supported a full US invasion and coup of Maduro and that was in Trump's first term.

Murder Capital album is so good, both Blindness and Gigi's recovery remain really underrated.
you'll spend your entire life thinking "that's not her, not really" and pushing the thought away. you'll never truly grieve. you'll become attached to a simulacrum, something that isn't your grandmother & never was; it will eventually replace her in your memory. you will live in hell before you die
Joining in the QT has bad opinions streak to say that Matthew Lillard in Scream gives one of the greatest performances ever in a horror film.
I feel like the use of Rocky Road to Dublin is a real tell for this: as a choice of song to build upon the themes of assimilation it's an awkward pick, but if you're going to pick a great fun Irish folk song to build a dance scene around you'd be hard pressed to find a better choice.
I'm not as a big a fan of 28YL as most people are, basically because I think it messes up a lot of its most important emotional beats near the end, but I can see myself getting obsessed with the bone temple.
I got three, one of which is the obvious one (Getting Killed) one of which is gonna make lists but lower than it should (Caroline 2) and one that seems to have made no real critical impact despite being unbelievably beautiful (Patience Moonbeam by Great Grandpa)
Ugh, I don't want Post Malone to play during the half time show, I was having such a good time being Pre Malone.
Father Ted is such a big deal here in Ireland that his descent into transphobic insanity is particularly depressing to watch. Like its as well known and quoted as prime era Simpsons would be here.
Glad I could celebrate Thanksgiving the traditional way, reading a bunch of posts about everyone's favourite films by a Japanese animation director.
As someone who considers Mononoke his favourite film of all time, part of what makes Miyazaki great is that other than maybe lupin anyone could say any of his films are their top three favourites and I'd go "makes sense". A ponyo, howls, wind rises top three is a good top three.

I do regret to inform you that My Bloody Valentine were life changing.
This is kind of my point: this is a tougher and more complicated thing to pull off than the essay thinks, and there's a reason he can only really mention masterpieces as counter exanples. Furiosa really makes it clear how unbelievable the balancing act of fury road is in hindsight.
A lot of furiosa doesn't look markedly different from fury road but when it slips up it does look completely fake. But it's a reminder that "keeping backgrounds in focus so they're visible" can cause the same problems of a lack of physicality that the essay is decrying.
As a furiosa defender it's a really interesting example of how slippery trying to find a cause for this stuff is, because the worst shots in it are a mixture of awkward framing with really long lenses condensing the frame, which with over saturated images can look muddled
It's a good start and a point for filmmakers to consider when making something but it feels like there's so much more left on the table.
The problem is that the reasons films feel digital and shiny is multifaceted: is it CGI and lack of finances? Yes! And no! Is it lighting and framing choices? Also yes! And also no! You said A Hidden Life doesn't feel the same way though shot digitally, ok, why?
I don't need him to solve the problem but as someone who has complained about how poorly modern Hollywood films films are blocked and framed in order it's odd to me that this very basic idea feels deeper and more practical than what this 27 minute video can muster.
Ok, so films feel less realistic in a sensory way and that's part of why they don't look as good. Cool, id broadly agree, so why is that? How does that manifest? What's the solution?
I found this essay frustrating for the same reason I can find a lot of film essays frustrating, in that it articulates its premise early on and rather than explore it it just circles the wagon on it.
I know I'm doing this well after the match ended but I am on cloud nine. Still absolutely cackling at Ronaldo's red card. What a bitch.
