It took me many years of listening to Dylan as a teen to realize that, despite what everyone was telling me, I wasn't listening to Dylan because I loved his lyrics β€” I was listening to him because I loved his oratory.

Your books are next to each other on my to-read pile, waiting for me to be less indolent.

"We the North" went the slogan of a professional basketball team, despite the existence of two other professional basketball teams situated further north.

😍WOW, what a roster!

These Puzzles Fund Abortion 6 will be released in March.

This all-star lineup has been hard at work making an incredible pack of crossword, cryptic, and variety puzzles, and we can’t wait for you to solve them 🀩

This was a fun one. One of these books was turned into a movie (which we talk about), and maybe the other one should be as well?

Yeah, I read it as a child, and I consider it the gateway to everything I love about literature. Baby’s first metatextual postmodernism.

This has been on the long list for books to cover on @thespouterinn.bsky.social for a while now. (I had that same urge to look up who the human author was a while back!)

you know, i've been meaning to reread that for like fifteen years, maybe this is my cue.

Yeah my understanding is that Pocket Casts doesn’t get up to such shenanigans. So that’s the podcast network inserting those. And maybe they’re confused (and/or you’re using a VPN?).

23.02.2026 17:41 πŸ‘ 0 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

I think that’s right. There’s no reason why they couldn’t do that, after all. But I admit, I don’t really listen to podcasts that are on networks that do that sort of thing.

23.02.2026 17:39 πŸ‘ 1 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 0 πŸ“Œ 0

Either way, the ads are sort of like YouTube ads β€” they're served to listeners based on demographic/geographic info, and the producers/hosts don't get much control over them (beyond asking their network not to take ad deals from a particular sponsor anymore because evil, or something).

23.02.2026 17:27 πŸ‘ 1 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

So last I checked, there are two kinds of dynamically inserted ads you might get β€” one from the podcast network, and one from the podcast player. But the only podcast player that I know of that does that sort of thing is Spotify.

I mean the most successful adaptation of Wuthering Heights to date has been Kate Bush's and she mostly covers a few pages in chapter 3!

Yes! I was surprised at how funny the book was (and then I watched the Olivier film and was like, oh, that's why the Discourse is so weird about this book).

Very yes! Also true of Phantom, though it’s been ages since I read that.

I finally read it for the podcast (and for my husband’s sake) last year, and it was a significantly weirder and funnier book than I had imagined from the way people talk about it.

We've been planning this pairing for YEARS. So happy to finally get to blurble on about Xavier de Maistre's weird little book with Suzanne.
