For the most part the beings are split apart from animals and other creatures by their intelligence and autonomy.
Aside from that they get categorised by me according to Villager, Stranger, Inhabitant and Spirit. There’s also a split between non-physical and physical beings.
A prompt set for stubbornness in today’s #WIPSnips.
Una set against a difficult challenge resolves to go about it her own way. Damn the deals, and damn magic tricks, if there’s one thing Una’s good at it’s improvising.

Kind of. There are a variety of weird creatures in the Woods, but for the most part the focus is on the sentient beings like the Strangers. At least in the first book.
But know that the Woods are a place of twisting, and that applies to any animals that stumble in as well.

For Prysena Village they have cows and sheep as cattle and a few assorted dogs and cats.
For the Halls… The Strangers are not sentimental creatures so the closest might be the Faceless Ones. Although arguably they’re more living weapons than companions.

Una’s been brought in for a type of interrogation, only to find herself attached to an artefact she cannot escape and does not understand…

Una’s a bit disoriented after having some “rest” and is worried about what might have happened in the Woods while she was out.
Naturally she wants to take off to go get some answers, but whether she’s hale enough to do so is the question…

The Abomination is a nature based creature with bark-like skin and vine like tendrils.
They can manipulate the Woods, including moving silently across trees and warping roots into traps.
Una meets them early on and quickly learns how powerful their control over nature is.
Using “pursuers” instead for today’s #WIPSnips.
It felt only fitting for the snippet for today to involve a bit of a chase as the Abomination and Una flee a potentially deadly set of foes.

It’s mainly simple crops for the most part. Barley, root vegetables, etc.
Prysena Village has limited farm lands to pick from, each of them a short way from the homes they live in.
The most fertile are used for crops and the least for animals, which swaps over the years.

Healing does not come up often in the Woods, but the Strangers do heal quicker than most.
The Abomination, however can grow a magical moss that can heal over wounds.
Once the healing is done the moss simply crumbles away and leaves healed skin in its place.
A trip into the Ethereal for today’s #WIPSnips.
Una’s terrible solitude is broken by some intangible beings who have a surprising amount to say despite having no mouths to say it with.

The Withered Flower is an important symbol to the cult members.
It represents how they believe the Queen and her Heir are unsuitable rulers and their leadership will rot the Woods.
But to those who despise the cult’s acts, they are considered to be a decay all of their own.

The Cult of the Withered Flower is a very magical group of usurpers that are looking to expand the influence of the Halls of the Rae’teromh.
They are enemies of the Heir and their leader is extremely magically powerful.

Unfortunately Una is all too good at making enemies, and not nearly half as successful in making allies.
This is partially due to her current circumstances, but otherwise Una’s stubbornness and unwillingness to bend easily that brings her into trouble.

Yeah, everything about the Woods is one big visual warning that they are NOT a place for humans.
They are very much the domain of the Strange and unnatural, even down to the individual trees and plants that make them up it is obvious that something is off

All of the trees in the Woods are pretty peculiar.
Some move on their own, none are really the right colour a tree should be, and they are all much more magic and connected then any trees from a more normal forest would be.

I think I’m most fond of this scene, can’t post the whole thing but it’s a very involved scene and an extremely interesting use of magic by the Lyveri.
And it’s a section that I had a lot of fun with as I was writing it.

The Council of Elders are the ones who selected Una to enter the Woods as a sacrifice, and for a less than kind reason…
In contrast the Queen has no interest in Una specifically, she sees all within the Halls as being hers to play with as she sees fit.

I think I like that my magic system is fundamentally blurred at its edges.
That it’s something not entirely knowable or understandable to the people and beings who live in the same world as it.
In that way it’s more like a force of nature than a system and that works for me!
I had almost 200 hits on the exact word, so here is an entry from an earlier part of the work for #WIPSnips.
Una is learning that all attention in the Woods is bad attention, and especially when it is as pointed as it is in this confrontation.
