There's going to be a special edition hardcover of STARTUP HELL from @thebrokenbinding.bsky.social - follow The Broken Binding for details on how to order as we get closer! They're limited edition (I only signed so many endpapers!) so once they're gone, they're gone!

It's ok, I used to sing soprano and play piccoloπŸ˜†

Feeling good about having switched to ground turkey or seitan for almost everything we used to use beef for. (We switched for health reasons, but the extra bonus ain't bad!)

If there are tenors around, they will tell you

Yes, hello, is that God? Yeah, hi. I have a complaint. You gave me this brain that’s designed for finding berries and avoiding lions and now people are β€˜just circling back’ to see if we can β€˜move the needle’ on β€˜key initiatives’? NONE of those things are berries.

I just got a phishing attempt apparently aimed at stealing one of my domain names. I didn't click on it, obviously, so I don't know if it was going to pivot to asking for money or what, but I think that's the first time I've seen one like that.

Be super careful out there, people.

I don't think it's an experience you're likely to forget! It'll be there, waiting, when you want the idea again.

Facebook Buy Nothing group. I'd had a more modern one that was a victim of a foam sword battle. This was free, and basically does what I need it to do!

Normally I would block this very obvious bot. And yet...it's so on brand here...

Everyone seems to know something you don't. Like what "growth hacking" even means. Aren't you tired of feeling like you're always behind?

I just finished Lady Eve's Last Con by @rebeccafraimow.bsky.social - it's a witty and stylish delight about a con artist trying to fool a wealthy heir into marrying her on a swanky satellite base. Really fun!

@mayor.nyc.gov It’s clear : New Yorkers want increased funds for our public libraries.

Because all the biggest names are going to be there. It may well be a shitshow (the first NYC Comic con was a DISASTER) but it's going to be enormous.

The more controversial bit is they're owned by a company owned by Lexis Nexus who is collaborating with ICE and so a bunch of authors are backing out or threatening to boycott next year if ties aren't severed.

Oh, it's just massive and kinda clique-y. They had a note early on to get on a mailing list if you were interested in being on panels and there would be more info forthcoming; there never was, they filled their panels entirely with big name authors. Wouldn't return my publisher's calls.

All caps: PREORDERS MAKE A HUGE DIFFERENCE IN THE LIFE OF A BOOK

as @charliejane.bsky.social explains here: ”When you pre-order a book, you are taking a more active role in supporting that book and that author, and it makes your relationship with both quite a bit more meaningful.”

Watching the absolute feeding frenzy that is the resurrected BookCon in NYC has been off-putting.

I think that's at least part of the problem - post-COVID, a lot of the hotels cranked up their fees by a lot. The organizers have to pay more, so they have to charge more, so only the artists who have optimized for profitability can afford the table fees, and it spirals.

Sure, you could sell your own soul. If you think you're back in the 1990s, that is. But here in 2025, smart business people know better. You don't gamble with your own capital. If you want to maximize your gains while minimizing your losses, the key is to leverage other people's money - or souls.
