I had to do some innocuous assessment at my all girl Catholic high school and after that got pulled into a meeting with like 10 other girls where it was strongly recommended that we consider becoming nuns. I... wasn't sure how to process that π

Clockwise, from top left: Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune, and Uranus. None of the worlds is to scale, but all are imaged with JWST's near-infrared (NIRCam) instrument.

Ugh same issue. Eyes so bad that I have to hand over $$$ for high index or I'm wearing coke bottles for lenses.
I had a true "king of prussia mentioned!" just now π
The language of abuse! "I'm hurting you because I love you. How dare you reject my love" Disgusting
Using all public storm reports from the NWS so far, I contoured a preliminary estimated snow accumulation map for today's blizzard (through 6-8pm EST tonight).
Truly a historic storm - both in terms of impacts, and the forecast challenges leading up to it.
Still satellite imagery of a nor'easter. This image contains the GeoColor product from the GOES-19 weather satellite from the morning of 2026-02-23.
A stunning satellite shot of a powerful nor'easter.
this just in from new york city: weβre hearing that mayor mamdani just signed an executive order making it illegal to NOT stand at your window and fold your arms and say βwow, itβs really coming down out thereβ
I think it's fear. The backlash to an underperforming storm would be worse than an over-performing storm. Their main nessage doesn't change (stay off the roads Sunday night, schools probably closed Monday, wind could cause power outages) whether we get 12" or 20"
And here we go
You can come stay with us in the Philly suburbs if you promise to help shovel.

Love to get a letter from dumbass Keystone once a year trying to collect taxes for 2017 for a town I moved out of the year before.

I'm sorry, that's awful. With my friends lately it's been all about parents falling ill. I guess that's another sign we're in our 40s.

I genuinely hope it's because they don't know what's happening. I hope.
Sir Ian McKellen performing a monologue from Shakespeareβs Sir Thomas More on the Stephen Colbert show. Never have I heard this monologue performed with such a keen sense of prescience. Nor have I ever been in this exact historical moment.TY Sir Ian, for reaching us once again.

A satellite image of the New York metropolitan area showing the effects of a prolonged cold spell in late January 2026. During a stretch of frigid weather, ice choked the Hudson River along Manhattanβs western shore. The OLI (Operational Land Imager) on Landsat 8 captured this image of the wintry landscape around midday on January 28. The image is false-color (bands 5-4-3) to distinguish ice (light blue) from open water and snow. Vegetation appears red. Ice is abundant in the Hudson River and visible in smaller amounts in the East River, the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir in Central Park, and waterways in New Jersey.

My favorite true Pennsylvania sentence is "I saw Punxatawney Phil at the banana split festival in Latrobe." His handlers were wearing shorts, polos and... top hats.
That flow tho.

I ditched HP inkjet for a Brother laser (which has always worked perfectly) after the ink dried up when we had it packed up to sell our house and move, and it became a tale of Sisyphus trying to get new "approved" ink. Never again.
