As a kid I remember House MD being one of the first shows that had a contemplative, abstract, musically stylized opening instead of the usual 90s “montage of scenes from the show with the lead actors’ faces” model.

Yeah, I feel like most of the services have been leaning on that same style since the Game of Thrones era. The sand thing especially for epics—Shogun, The Wheel of Time, Rings of Power. Or they do a bunch of mannequins/statues/masks like Hannibal, Daredevil, Westworld, The Crown, Black Sails.
