To me, the photograph was as impactful as the well-known image of Phan Thị Kim Phúc fleeing a napalm attack (Nick Ut, 1972). I’ve learned that the RFK photo was not widely republished and does not appear in most digital archives.

Kennedy appeared to be listening intently to the child’s mother. I believe that Jim Lucas was the photographer.

I began searching for this image while reflecting on the interruption of SNAP funding.

The photo showed Senator Robert F. Kennedy in a small cabin in the Mississippi Delta, sitting quietly near a young Black child lying on a bed. The child’s stomach was swollen from severe malnutrition (kwashiorkor).

I'm looking for a photograph from Robert F. Kennedy’s 1967 visit to Mississippi.

I recall seeing it in Look magazine in 1967 — likely the May 23 or June 6 issue.
