“People don’t feel that they can be critical [of Mowi], because that's who’s paying them, for their jobs and for their shinty clubs and strips.” @ariane-burgess.bsky.social, a Scottish Green Member of Parliament, told DeSmog.

Locals say Mowi is using a charm offensive to distract from its “polluting” fish farms — by taking Highlands schoolchildren to visit its “sustainable” fish farms, and sponsoring locals sports and community events.

We found that, to treat sea lice infestations, Mowi exceeded the authorised limits for the use of toxic pesticides seven times in one month. Local fishers say the velvet crabs they catch are “pretty much extinct” around salmon farms.

Mowi produces > 1/5th of the world’s farmed salmon and plans to grow globally by producing 600,000 tonnes of salmon a year in 2029, up 20% from current levels. In Scotland, Mowi produces a third of the country’s salmon, and is planning to expand.
