Itβs exciting to see converging evidence across systems! π
Alongside the new work on gutless worms, our study shows that organosulfur cycling is also essential in lucinid holobionts. Lucinid host provides DMSP to its symbionts, sulphur-oxidising Thiodiazotropha and, a new member, Endozoicomonas.
Preprint alert π Organosulfur compounds support carbon and energy metabolism in chemosynthetic symbiosis. Happy to see this cool collaboration with @organosulfur.bsky.social and others out π₯³

Together, our findings reveal that organosulfur metabolism is an active and conserved feature of shallow-water chemosynthetic symbioses.
This expands our understanding of how such partnerships function in low-sulfide, DMSP-rich sediments.
We also found that the host encodes a methanethiol oxidase (mtoX-like) gene, expressed in the epidermis.
This suggests a potential hostβsymbiont metabolic handoff, where symbionts produce methanethiol and the host detoxifies it, maintaining redox balance within the association.
Using metagenomics and transcriptomics, we identified genes for:
β’ DMSP demethylation and cleavage
β’ DMS oxidation and DMSO reduction
β’ Methanethiol oxidation
These pathways form an integrated network that links sulfur, carbon, and nitrogen metabolism among different symbionts.

New preprint!
We explore how gutless marine worms and their bacterial symbionts use organosulfur compounds like DMSP and DMS - key molecules in marine sulfur cycling.
Our results show that these compounds support carbon and energy metabolism in the Olavius algarvensis symbiosis.
π Fresh from Elba!
PhD student Kristina brought back lucinid clams for our research on symbiosis & sulfur cycling. Theyβll also support hands-on teaching in marine biology. ππ¬
