It's about time we start organizing the Liege Colloquium for 2026! Submesocale Processes in the ocean will be the topic, a revisit of the Colloquium of 2016. 10 years of advances!
I'll try to document here the journey towards organizing such an event, maybe there's interest? #LiegeOcean26 ππ§ͺ

And, there's a challenge in how ML models deal with 'missing data', especially when it's land in an ocean model -- these points have impact on the dynamics even though they are not themselves modeled. Maybe new ML techniques built specifically for geosciences are needed...?

This highlights the importance of robust assessment of ML models to catch systematic bias. ML models are optimised to give good average RMSE, but the way we use these models is so much broader, so our assessment needs to be broad too. There's an inherent optimism-use dichotomy in ML models.

In amongst all the chaos of early January and a return to reality, this paper from my PhD got published!
We show that a UNet trained to emulate an idealised ocean configuration works brilliantly overall, but very badly near land....

It's been great to see posts about #AGU24 this week. If, like me, you feel you've missed out, there's still time to submit an abstract for #EGU25 in Vienna at the end of April.
We're running a session on machine learning for ocean science, send us an abstract if you're working in this area.
