Reaching net zero by 2050 ‘cheaper for UK than one fossil fuel crisis’
Climate change committee finds move to renewable energy would also bring health, economic and security benefits
Our dependency on fossil fuels makes us vulnerable. Wars across the world are pushing up prices for households in the UK.
Why keep waiting for the next crisis? We need to transition to clean power as fast as we can to protect people and our economy.

Storage is broadly stable. It wasn’t that full even a month ago. You are making the false assumption that the storage has run down because of the war. It hasn’t.

There is more storage capacity than we are using right now. Storage costs money. Why would we spend more on storage which we aren’t using now, when there are other parts of the transition to fund?

Revealed: UK’s multibillion AI drive is built on ‘phantom investments’
Exclusive: Rented datacentres and unrealised supercomputer site raise questions for Starmer’s push to ‘mainline AI into veins of economy’
Never mind mad ideas about getting more gas from the North Sea. The AI press releases claim we can get 1GW of renewable energy on a single site in Lanarkshire.
Some excellent scepticism here from the Guardian.

ledow's comment on "Modern alternative to old storage heaters?"
Explore this conversation and more from the DIYUK community
The fact you already have a water tank is helpful - any transition to more efficient options is easier with storage already in place.
Storage heaters are a pain. What we should do is learn from those who have tried to move on from them, plenty in your position. Eg. www.reddit.com/r/DIYUK/s/po...

You’re already off gas - not an issue for you.
Elsewhere - we will probably mostly install heat networks and heat pumps in new builds or separate properties for next period. Otherwise likely just change installs inside flats.
And FYI - i live in a London flat, with gas, and help manage the block.

So you’re already off gas. Great. You might reduce your energy costs in future with storage (electric or hot water) or a hybrid boiler but actually - you’re in a good place. And may not need to use a communal system at all.

If i still had my oil tank it would now cost £114 MORE to fill it than it did to install our Air Source Heat Pump central heating system ( after the grant obvs)
it was the Ukrainian spike that sealed the move in 2024.

Heat networks in London
This data analysis, produced by the London Assembly Research Unit, provides an overview of heat networks in London.
Quite a lot of flats in London are already in place with no access to gas, if anything London is further ahead on that shift. Already half of the homes in England on a heat network are in London. And there are others that use electric only. www.london.gov.uk/heat-network...

It’s not really how it works, the committees have their specific focuses. Which is what I’ve tried to explain. The way to get attention to new issues is to flag to AMs as elected representatives, helpful staff (waves hand). It’s better to work that way and have the assembly navigate its structures.

You get some elements of it within some of the Mayor’s strategies but most of the delivery is by the councils in London or it’s centralised and in English or UK departments of central government. Which isn’t to say I agree with that as a way of governing london - but it is where we are.

Arguably it’s not covered by anyone in the assembly particularly as it’s not in the powers of the Mayor.

There’s ways of going across if needed - eg transport and environment doing joint work, or just a word between chairs. But it’s pretty standard that the establishment of a committee defines its outlook. And it’s transparent. www.london.gov.uk/sites/defaul...

We will continue to support the First Past the Post system of voting, as it allows voters to kick out politicians who don't deliver, both locally and nationally.

What I will never understand is....Twitter was *never* a good gauge of public opinion! I genuinely cannot understand the people who have clearly been using it as a measure of something other than 'internal leadership contests' (where it was genuinely useful' or 'ways to discover cool links'.
