In 1975 when I was 15, my favorite comics writers were Gerber, Thomas, Moench, Goodwin and OβNeil. Thomas is the one who doesnβt hold up for me now. I also find Gerberβs Man-Thing almost as overwritten as anything by McGregor, but still love his Defenders and Howard.
I suspect that David Drakeβs debut novel Dragon Lord was originally meant to be about Cormac and Wulfhere.
Iβd love more exploits of Red Sonya of Rogatino, either solo or constantly having to save Von Kalmbachβs big dumb drunken ass.
And despite being a 20th century Texas gunfighter rather than a Victorian swordsman, he has more than a bit of this scholar, spy and all-around tough bastard.

Bunuel had to fight for Dan O'Herlihy, whoβd been Macduff to Wellesβs Macbeth. His Mexican producers wanted Welles, whom Bunuel called βtoo loud and too fat.β

William Hope Hodgson. An exponent of what was then called physical culture, as well as a tough sailor and soldier who looked good in a uniform.
Isnβt that Fritz Leiber Sr., his father, Shakespearean actor/manager & Hollywood character actor? Fritz Jr. resembled his dad, but that photo looks like it dates from the 20s, when Fritz Sr. was playing Hamlet & Fritz Jr. was a teenager playing very small roles in his dadβs company.
It was perfect Valentineβs weekend viewing, sweetheart.
Till my beautiful and beloved @superamanda.bsky.social told me, I had no idea that Fred Gwynne wrote and illustrated childrenβs books.
Some folks have forgotten things how bad things were in Downtown #Greensboro in 1992.
I remember when the GPD was routed and a patrol car was set on fire by outside agitators.

My love @superamanda.bsky.social & I have walked downtown multiple times in the past few years and never felt unsafe. Nor have I in the over 30 years of doing that before I met her.
My latest article is about how crime statistics do not support the narrative that downtown #Greensboro is disproportionately dangerous. Multiple white men are arguing with this in Facebook comments, often without having read the article.

I stupidly tagged the wrong man in my skeet about Eric Larson making this reply to Monica Valentinelli on Facebook.
Itβs NOT comics artist/writer/publisher Erik Larsen, to whom I apologize.
Itβs Eric Larson, whom I believe has been a Fan Guest of Honor at Gen Con.
I did not have DGI President Zack Matheny blaming Ozempic for #GSO restaurant closures on my bingo card. My cover store in the latest YES! Weekly.

Look at this kvetching Karenating killjoy complaining about TCM showing three Marvin the Martian cartoons before William Cameron Menziesβ INVADERS FROM MARS. What a maroon.

Here is my article on this from Black Gate.

1973, not 1968. Iβd been reading Grahamβs Warren work and then noticed his illos in Amazing and Fantastic, which is where I also first noticed Kaluta and Cockrum.
Apparently, it's okay for armed agents of the state to seize a man from a church, but not okay for journalists to report on a protest taking place at a church.
Yesterday, my love @superamanda.bsky.social and I spent hours down this rabbit hole, as they were her childhood environs and I only knew Berkley from reading about it until she took me there. Exploring this time capsule with her was magical.
Iβm glad that Moshe Feder, who thinks people who use the term βAI Slopβ are bigots, is at least semi-retired from Tor.
Halloween 1976 issue of the BERKELEY BARB.
Thereβs a never-before reprinted short story by Fritz Leiber (clearly the genesis of OUR LADY OF DARKNESS), a history of drag & a feature in which Ursula K Le Guin, Mayor George Moscone, Lawrence Ferlinghetti & Grace Slick say what scares them.
Iβm so glad I have my love and, soon, my wife, @superamanda.bsky.social and that she has me.
None of that is in the Toho version.
In the original Japanese print, which has a lot of corporate media satire and more original music (the Universal version uses a lot of Creature from the Black Lagoon curse), itβs the logo of a TV network.
You can imagine how this blew me away when my granddad bought me the Best of Creepy at Woolworthβs.
I already loved Frazetta from his REH & ERB covers, but I donβt think Iβd seen his comics yet. I did know what a great draftsmen he was from his illustrations in the Lupoff ERB bio, which is where I first learned his name, as well as that of Crandall and Williamson.
Oh yes, absolutely. Discovering Raboy and Lou Fine in the Steranko History of Comics was a revelation.
Before that, I thought all vintage comics looked like the ones reprinted in Feifferβs The Great Comic Book Heroes.
The word is Murdered.
ICE murdered an ICU nurse.
She defied cops, the Klan, & the racism of Dairy Queen and K&W.
