Opinion | Iran’s New Supreme Leader Represents a Choice: Defiance Iran’s new supreme leader has been selected not to break with the regime but to preserve it.

“The selection of Mr. Khamenei makes one thing clear: Rather than compelling Iran to change course, the president’s war plan is pushing it to dig in,” Vali R. Nasr writes.

Genocide was a bipartisan project in the 19th century; supporting it in 2023-2026 is also bipartisan, it pains me to say.

Also overlooks Rana's Constitutional Bind, more in tune with Lepore's rather bleak view but from a far more expansive angle of intellectual history and social/political context.

The Invasion of America
The Invasion of America YouTube video by eHistory.org

But even if they are right about Manhattan, almost all of the land currently within the United States was acquired by unjust treaties (later broken) backed by genocidal violence.

The authors assert that “much land was acquired by agreement” and give as an example “the island of Manhattan.” But most scholars believe the Lenape did not agree to give up their land, but only made a treaty to allow Dutch settlers to share it with them.

OK, to put it crudely, the Comanches stole land from other tribes, but that does not disprove that the U.S. was then built on land stolen from them and other Indigenous nations.

Nor are the usual red herrings about “But Native Americans did mayhem against each other!” “Look at the Comanches!” (I doubt the authors know much at all about Native American history, but, like all law professors, they have at least heard of the Comanches).

Nor are red herrings about the legal and practical impossibilities of returning all U.S. land to Indigenous nations (the bulk of the article is about these).

I know little about Eilish’s motivations or mansion (though I do like her Barbie song). The Tongva tribe has said they appreciate her sentiment, but note that “she has never reached out to them directly and said public figures should explicitly acknowledge the tribe by name.”

The authors are very unhappy about Billie Eilish's statement that "No one is illegal on stolen land."

A few thoughts about another ill-informed refutation of the undeniable fact that the U.S. is built on lands stolen from Indigenous peoples.

I realize it's hard to be completely accurate in a map like this, but the Sioux just in Minnesota? By 1776, Lakotas had been well to the west for some time. Also, Ojibwes only in Canada? And no Blackfeet?

The pro-ICE church is worse than you think Cities Church in St. Paul is the persecutor, not the persecuted

I looked into Cities Church, which was protested for having an ICE agent as a pastor.

You already thought they were right-wing. But they're far worse than you thought.

They're ground zero for the "empathy is a sin" idea, among others.
