I keep a Griff in my wallet all the time for exactly these "I really need a bat detector" moments. Of course I still need to remember to keep my wallet in my pocket ...
@ramoneskaraoke
I make software, electronics and 3D prints to enable people on tiny budgets to hear and record the extraordinary sounds of bats. Big fan of wildlife, of records with prominent guitars and snappy snares, and every second of the 1970s.

Also @martinwildlife.bsky.social would a Bat Synth be useful to support live demos of pip mini and pippyg for this kind of event?
Ohh, pippyg and pipistrelle mini have new packaging - cool!
Ooooh nice!
βElon Muskβs Tesla given go-ahead to supply electricity in Great Britain.β A subheading underneath says: βOfgem licence means firm can replicate Texas setup of powering homes, businesses and EVs.β
Ed Miliband must step in and bar Tesla from holding an energy licence.
Elon Musk is a threat to our national security and clearly not a fit person to operate in our energy industry.
We canβt have the lights go out because heβs having a strop on X.
I hadn't seen this but yes, if they vocalise ultrasound the detectors will pick them up.
My vote goes to either Noctule or Brown Long Eared. And if you put a gun to my head, fond memories of the wonderful Griff mean I just have to come down on the side of Noctule.
Excellent, and news to me!
Wow. Deliberately bat-friendly street lights - Denmark does βPlanning and Infrastructureβ way better than we do. dailygalaxy.com/2026/03/denm...
It would be really to see a live one for a change. 3 Great Crested Newts since we moved to the area, all dead on the road. It's nice to know they are around, but honestly, a live one would be GREAT.
This could end badly. This ship will have a giant target on its back, Iran have already used submarine drones on shipping, Ukraine have shown how devastating these drones can be, and I fear we don't have the right defences in place.
Yesterday evening's bat highlights. The Serotine is definite despite the sub-90 percentage from the pipeline, the "Bechsteins" I will put down as "noisy Myotis recording". The Natterer's really sounds like a Natterer's, nothing like the other bats - ultra-short, ultra-sweepy calls.
Plus, great harmonics, and they are real - at this quiet level no way are they distortion artifacts :)
2nd March and glory be, Barbastelle AT THE FRONT DOOR! AGAIN!!! Plus first Serotine of the year, what looked at first glance like a Brown Long-Eared - getting these off to the BTO pipeline right now. @batconservation.bsky.social
Operation βMake International Flights Dangerous Againβ
The page still claims that Time Expansion detectors start at Β£1000 rather than Β£62. Also the description assumes that a big chunk of sound is recorded then played back, as opposed to continuous analysis and isolation of single bat calls, then replay of the call 16x or 10x slower than real-time.
Nice work Glyn old bean!
This is so upsetting. Absolute f*ckers.

Another ray of light for the world.
A couple of pips about tonight.
Thanks for this :)
This is a great idea. Now let's see their true colours, which I sincerely hope are rainbow.
The Β£62 Apodemus pipistrelle mini has been on sale in the UK for 12 months and does time expansion, auto-tuned heterodyne detection and 384kHz smartphone integration for full-spectrum recording. Pure heterodyne detectors are no longer the cheapest option - I wish you would update your guidance.
First fox of 2026 (I think).
If you ever need to reflash firmware on a pippyg but have access to neither a Windows machine nor a Mac, only a Raspberry Pi, fear not - the pippyg mounts just fine as a USB drive on the Pi, allowing you to reflash to your heart's content.

My process of silently unfollowing accounts that repeatedly post the same thing is now underway.
Jeff Goldblum?
Male Blackcap just now, eating ivy berries.
Presenting the best record from 1978 that you never heard before, and featuring the classic 1978 move of "taking it about 8 BPM too fast". Bonus - great guitar solo.
