Great piece from @dsquareddigest.bsky.social, which touches on one of the big theories for why English-speaking countries do especially badly at housebuilding:
Adversarial and litigious common law systems (Anglo) vs judge-led civil law systems elsewhere.

A reminder to the news media: βconflicting accountsβ is what you say BEFORE the incontrovertible video evidence appears. After that, your job is to ask why one side is lying, not to repeat the lie and pretend no one knows the truth.
This one is making the rounds.
But after a tense πͺπΊ vs πΊπΈ week it is needed.
Healthier, less poor, fairer, more equitable, safer.

Chart from Economist on unemployment in Southern and Northern Europe since 2005 now converging.
Amazing chart with horrible acronyms - for the first time in my living memory, unemployment in Northern Europe and Southern Europe seems to have converged. Seemed unthinkable during the Eurozone crisis.

Excellent opening in particular.
Fun fact for a pub quiz for EU nerds:
Made the calculation for today's Mercosur vote. It is not only unusual for such a major step to be adopted just above the threshold for an absolute majority. It is also the first case I could find where the old, pre 2014 weighted votes would have produced a No.
For those keeping score, Bellingcat, The New York Times Visual Investigation Team, & Washington Post's Visual Forensic team have all published analysis showing the ICE shooter wasn't in the path of Renee Nicole Goodβs vehicle when he shot her, contradicting statements by the President & his cronies

With the decision to make available a β¬90 billion loan to Ukraine, the EU has lived up to its commitment to continue supporting the country.
Will this be sufficient for Ukraine to win the war? No.
But still, the European Council of 18 Dec. warrants cautious optimism.
Why?π
Europeans are waking up this morning to find the new US National Security Strategy (quietly) released. And what it has to say on Europe could not be clearer. On the βstark prospect of civilizations erasureβ for example. π

I merged the CHES expert survey with EP composition data to visualize the political space of the current EP. The graphs make the center of gravity in the EP quite clear, on multiple dimensions and policy issues.
