Tracking via phones or computers has been going on for decades, not just for online advertising. Once you give an email, e.g. to login, your web activity can be connected to hidden data broker records available to anyone who pays, or to governments with questionable ethics & inadequate laws.

Though now some green shoots - good law passed & being enforced in US states & emerging collective action in Europe to compete with regulators.
Online laws are impossible to enforce because the tech comes from US where weak law is hobbled by corporate lobbyists, while elsewhere enforcers are captured or incompetent.
We must stop pretending that Brexit was just a domestic choice.
It was a successful Russian hybrid operation designed to shatter Western cooperation.
This betrayal has left both the UK and the EU more vulnerable to aggression.
