To me personally it actually diminishes our flag, there is something special when it's flown for our sports teams, our achievements, our service personnel and yes even our royals, seeing it constantly is just naff...
I tend now to say "they" when I don't know about partner, in fact I try not to use he/she I always refer to people by their name if I know it, and then they/their when I don't.
