The building in the centre of Algernon Newton's picture from 1943, is what used to be The Lord Nelson pub at Beck Hole in North Yorkshire. Newton had bought the property two years earlier after leaving London and converting the upper floor into a studio.

Part of a large illustrated Poems of Emily Brontë I did for A-level art. The text and most of the images were done in watercolour with a very small brush (the kind I now use for oil painting). There’s also some pencil and possibly pastel drawing, or maybe charcoal. I can’t remember.

Suburban joys
In an interview with an art critic in the 1920s, Barnett Freedman is quoted as saying 'There’s nothing I hate more than fresh air and wide open spaces. I love London and the people who live in it. ' This very populated painting was made in 1913.
Carel Weight's picture 'The Thames at Hammersmith,' (1947) is painted in the part of London where he first studied art (from 1926 to 1929) Weight painted this from the artist Julian Trevelyan's studio on Durham Wharf which looked down the river towards Hammersmith Bridge.

'Pisa, the Campo Santo.' (1942) Writing about his time as a WW2 war artist, Carel Weight reflected: 'Artists often say we can’t paint a place until we really know it, but I never had the chance to know anywhere. I learned to settle quickly and find what mattered.'
