In the manner of my people, I express my gratitude for this driverly soundness when exiting the bus by the middle doors by shouting “thank you” to said bus driver (who almost certainly cannot hear me).
I’m pleased to announce that I appear to be scoring consistently well on this scale.
In the absence of any metric on the Dublin Bus website to explain how the distance for the shorter €1.50 fare is calculated, I have come to the conclusion that is deduced by how each individual driver rates the hopeful passenger on a scale of “seems sound enough”/“not taking the mickey”/“whatever”.
