Trump is doing real harm to a much broader swath of Americans (and people around the world) this time around than in his first term. That's making him less popular, and making the people who don't like him hate him harder.
Journalistic practice is responsive to both of those trends.
I may be wrong, but it feels to me like reporters are giving Trump a lot more "Yeah, no, that's bullshit" responses now than they did just a few months ago.
LANDERS: Why did the FBI seize election records in AZ?
TRUMP: They probably thought the election was rigged
LANDERS: It wasn't though
TRUMP: Oh really? How do you know?
LANDERS: Your own AG said it
TRUMP: If you say it wasn't rigged, you're a rotten reporter
LANDERS: Where's the evidence?
"please rate your purchase experience"
absolutely not, I paid in currency for goods or services which you then delivered, I do not need to validate your weird need for validation afterward
Absolutely horrible companies
Once passed, this law will finalize the collapsing of many ethnic identities in China that I write about in my book, Let Only Red Flowers Bloom npcobserver.com/2026/03/05/c...
“If you’ve been a resident of D.C. you’ve walked past dozens of fountains that haven’t worked for decades,” says Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, noting the Trump administration is spending $120 million to fix federal fountains in the city as part of the country’s 250th anniversary.
Has anyone mapped the resistances to data centers alongside the mid century neighborhoods targeted & destroyed by highways/urban renewal? Feels like there could be some interesting continuity.
This is happening in PA in the state house committee (vote is tomorrow) — if you're in PA, contact your rep!
But it's literally happening everywhere, so no matter where you are, check what's happening at the state level with AI/data centers.

Protest. No data center in Monterey Park!
A sticker on a sweater: a Chinese dragon crushing a data center. (My illustration!)
The Monterey Park city council meeting last night went on for over 6 hours! Almost 100 residents spoke up and were heard. Clearly, nobody wants this data center. I have faith in this SGV community!

Tech deployed at the border “includes everything from hyper-visible tethered aerostats — massive blimp-like detection platforms hovering thousands of feet over the desert — to stealthy devices like unattended ground sensors to detect footsteps, and license plate scanners disguised as traffic cones.”
Apparently, your data being used against you is an international issue.

He said supermarket staff were unable to explain why he was being told to leave, and would only direct him to a QR code leading to the website of the firm Facewatch, which the retailer has hired to run facial recognition in some of its stores. He said when he contacted Facewatch, he was told to send in a picture of himself and a photograph of his passport before the firm confirmed it had no record of him on its database.
Give us your face in order to prove that you aren’t a criminal.
“‘One of the reasons I was angry was because I shouldn’t have to prove I am innocent,’ Rajah said. ‘I shouldn’t have to prove I’m wrongly identified as a criminal.’ He described the incident as feeling ‘quite like Minority Report, Orwellian’”.
8. I would be remiss if I did not mention that the Epstein files shows the extent to which old political alliances are compromised. It’s depraved. It is also unfortunately capitalism. Tech elite has the money to shape public opinion and intervene in state law because of that cabal of exploitation.
7. Political messaging is lagging regular people’s sense that tech has gone rogue. There is an opportunity to tap into fear about government overreach and economic insecurity. That would tie together several threads of political structures of opportunity — from occupy to environmental racism
6. I worked in this column while also finishing the final stages of our documentary on the Black Panther Party. It wasn’t hard to imagine COINTELPRO with an algorithm in a post citizens united landscape. Hoover would be vibrating at this kind of power.
5. The administration continues to treat state sovereignty as fungible. As strange as it feels for organizers, a states rights orientation feels like the more progressive position. They are figuring that whiplash out.
So I expect we will see more well funded efforts around midterms to put down these coalitions.

4. I’ve spent some time tracking and attending local populist responses to ai data centers. Despite some critiques from left that it’s all repackaged “nimby bullshit” (as I’ve been told), I have seen organic multiracial coalitions on this issue. Esp. in places with strong environmental racism orgs
3. Some of the superpac organization around Ai is just about having too much money to burn.

2. You aren’t crazy. Your local and state elections do seem even more supercharged than usual. Speculative finance means donor class has more money to spend while their national voter suppression means there are fewer races to influence.

Thank you, Victor. I spent a few weeks on this. As usual, it’s always a negotiation with length. So a few other bon mots:
1. The admin has issued DOJ guidance to challenge state laws that would regulate AI

“You need only know this: Whatever is happening with your data, it is important enough to the most egregiously lawless administration in American history that it be collected and consolidated.” Always read @tressiemcphd.bsky.social (gift link)
I’ve heard these dismissals of data center organizing from leftists and liberals (all men, for what that’s worth) and it is mind-boggling.
A lot of what people lump together with NIMBYism is actually built on the infrastructure created by environmental racism organizers
