I often stop and think about how we’re letting COVID circulate with very low vax rates (pls get vaxxed if poss), no clean air, no treatment for Long Covid—and public health isn’t even encouraging basic precautions like masking, or warning that Long Covid is a risk. And it makes me very angry tbh.

An important clarification:
when you hear people say
“during Covid”
they do not mean
back when they
were at risk of catching Covid,
for (alas) that time remains,
no, when you hear people say
“during Covid”
they mean
back when they
were trying not to catch Covid.

Why do they always emphasize hand hygiene if clean air is so important?

Because the air is their responsibility, and your hands are yours.

How Covid Quietly Rewires the Brain Researchers keep discovering more about the long-term neurological effects of SARS-CoV-2.

How long do the effects of Covid really last? Researchers are still discovering new neurological issues.

Loss of Infectivity of Influenza Virus and SARS-CoV-2 during Aerosol Sampling Our understanding of transmission of influenza virus and other respiratory viruses is limited by the difficulty of detecting infectious viruses in aerosol particles. Most aerosol sampling methods are believed to contribute to virus inactivation, but the magnitude of this sampling artifact is unknown. To investigate this question, we aerosolized influenza A virus (IAV) and SARS-CoV-2 suspended in human saliva into a small chamber (3.7 L). Aerosols settled for 10 min onto either cells or a thin layer of liquid medium that was immediately transferred to cells for plaque assay. Aerosols that deposited directly onto cells led to the formation of 100× more plaque forming units (PFU) compared to aerosols that deposited first into liquid medium. Further experiments ruled out uneven aerosol distribution in the chamber or inefficient virus recovery as causes of this discrepancy. These findings indicate that aerosolized IAV and SARS-CoV-2 lost infectivity by approximately 2 log10 PFU within ∼10 min unless they attached to cells quickly. As natural infection via inhalation occurs by direct deposition of the virus onto cells, we hypothesize that sampling directly onto cells more accurately reflects the potential for exposure to lead to infection.

Our latest paper shows that most aerosol sampling methods may underestimate infectious virus in air. We observed 100x more infectious flu virus and SARS-CoV-2 if it deposited directly on cells (more realistic) rather than in liquid first and then transferred to cells. pubs.acs.org/doi/full/10....

People can have different political opinions about immigration policy. Political differences are fine, healthy for a democracy.

But if you’re okay with this, that’s not a political opinion. That is a moral failing.

Text says "A measles vaccine analogy if you understand Dungeons & Dragons: Measles has a DC of 19 (you have an approximately 90% chance of getting measles if exposed and not vaccinated). The measles vaccine (MMR) would confer a +17 bonus to the average adventurer (CON 10), giving you a 95% chance to resist measles if you encounter the disease in your journey. (Two doses of the MMR vaccine actually = about 97% effective, but I’m told getting to 97% exactly in the game is more complicated than can be explained in a graphic.). In other words, the MMR vaccine is better than even very powerful magical items!” Beside the text is a picture of a cartoon baby dragon. The caption beneath the image is a caption that says "Definitely (absolutely not) an accurate representation of what the dragons look like. We didn’t want to accidentally choose a dragon that looks like a very bad one, and we made this graphic in like 5 minutes, so this one seemed safe."

Yesterday, someone made a Dungeons & Dragons analogy for vaccines in our (Facebook) comments. I don't play or understand D&D, so I asked our Preparedness Coordinator to explain. I still don’t understand it, but he said this analogy will be understood by people who do! Anyway, please get vaccinated.

An airborne virus is a virus that can infect other people through unseen particles in the air, sometimes for hours after the sick person has left the area! Masks and clean, ventilated air can reduce the risk of getting sick from airborne viruses or infecting others.

Here's an easy way to select a minimum clean air delivery rate (CADR) when you're shopping for a portable air cleaner (filter).

For example, if my room is 15 ft x 12 ft = 180 sq ft, then I'd want a CADR of at least 120 CFM (cubic feet per minute).

Actually, never wearing a mask in public is extremely weird … and high-risk people have been really nice about not constantly, and loudly, pointing that out.

On Jon Stewart and the controversy over his remarks about those of us still masking to protect ourselves and others.

We expect better of him. And I hope he examines his bias in this as a result of the backlash.

One of the most dangerous persistent myths is that planes are safe due to ventilation.

In reality ventilation is only on part of the time, and there is bad ventilation before and after take off.

And viruses can still spread easily in crowds over short distances regardless of ventilation status.

As she recounted
a disappointing dinner party
my work friend asked
if I knew the feeling
of being with people
(of being with good people)
but still just feeling
profoundly alone,
and as I adjusted my mask
I looked
at my friend’s bare face
and simply said:
I know the feeling.

I keep hearing people ask,
so if you are truly wondering
what the secret
of people
who rarely get sick is,
I shall tell you:
the secret is not
to ask yourself
what you should do
to protect yourself,
no, the secret is
to ask yourself
what you should do
to protect everyone.
