A trope arrow book promo image. In the center is the cover for The Need for Dandelions, around it are six arrows:
- Sort of Enemies to Lovers
- Forced Proximity
- Queer Normative World
- Flower Symbolism
- Oh. *Oh.*
- Falling in love during a crisis

Book cover description: Two men stand back to back surrounded by depictions of dandelions. The man angled to the front is Galen. He has tan skin, red hair, and hazel eyes. A large portion of his face is covered by a burn scar. He wears a yellow tunic and brown pants, along with a pink flower pendant. He lifts up one hand, and looks concerned. The other man, facing towards the back but looks over his shoulder, is Sasha. He has light brown hair, dark brown eyes, and stubble. He is wearing leather armor and green shirt and pants. He is holding a sword.

NEW VIDEO ALERT! Today on Bar Cart Bookshelf we're talking about THE RED WINTER by Cameron Sullivan. A queer historical fantasy of strange sorceries, avenging angels, & ravenous werewolves, an utterly delightful debut novel. Our drink is The Beast, be careful not to share with our protagonist...

So I feel (both as a reader & author) like discoverability of new books is down lately, especially for the midlist. Please tell me some recently published (past year-ish) SFF books you loved that are midlist/overlooked/deserve more hype! (And please share your recs/this list!)

My recs in reply!

Please preorder as preorders are love (and I'm currently a very anxious writer hiding under the blankets).
More seriously: this has been a difficult set of years for us (mental health crisis of relative, hospital, etc), and income would be v welcome. I mean it's always welcome but this year esp.

Anyway, cos I am in writer limbo thought I'd jot down some ideas for Mortedant 3. No point starting it, whether there's a 3 depends on how well the first one does.

Pre-order it here, it has it's first blurb!(from the fab @decastell.bsky.social who also has a book out in May, Our Lady of Blades.)

The spear cuts through water, by Simon Jimenez is wonderful ( long and a bit experimental in the writing)

A book cover for Bodies of Magic by Freya Markse. A deep blue building with a quadrangle, spires and cloisters fills the lower half of the cover with the title text in gold across it. Behind that, the upper background is grey and stormy with a prominent twisting white design that could be a bare tree rising up from the main tower OR an anatomical diagram of the lungs. Centered above the lung-tree are the words DO NO HARM in stark white. Honestly: a complete banger of a cover. Doesn't it make you want to preorder? Yes, yes it does.

BODIES OF MAGIC, out Sept 2026: Grey's Anatomy meets A Deadly Education, a mystery set during the final exam week of a magical medical school. (Or: five queer nerds solve a murder and have some feelings.)

✨Asunder is out in the UK today!✨

Shortlisted for the Nebula and Locus Awards, it’s a fantasy about a woman hellbent on survival…and the talkative man she accidentally binds to her shadow.*

*She was trying to extort him, one thing led to another.

I begged Jenny to write this and am so grateful she did.

Sex scene are craft. They are characterization. They are worldbuilding. They are storytelling.

The fact that we're culturally too uncomfortable with sex to recognize that is not the fault of well written sex scenes!

10.12.2025 14:34 πŸ‘ 364 πŸ” 98 πŸ’¬ 9 πŸ“Œ 2

Jenny is doing such incredible work writing about the work that sex scenes do and I'm so grateful for it. We need more of this, but for reasons covered in the essay, a lot of critics are afraid or ill-equipped to do it.

Anyway, this is excellent
