There has never existed at any point the national supermajority necessary to implement abortion rights into the constitution. Amending the constitution is deliberately so difficult as to be basically impossible for anything even slightly controversial.
It fucking sucks that assholes like Newsom talk shit, but even under him California is much, much more supportive of trans rights than almost anywhere else on earth. And the national Democratic caucus is still pushing for trans rights.

Been working my way through Gillian Bradshaw's novels. She's a classical philologist who wrote some excellent historical fiction about the ancient world, especially Rome in late antiquity. Nice to read about people trying to find some scraps of joy in a doomed world.
