3 Tickets to ‘Design for Living,’ Please Bart DeLorenzo directs Noël Coward’s original ‘throuple’ play at the Odyssey.

I saw a formative production in L.A. many years ago, and a more recent one by a fave director there gave me the excuse to revisit it www.americantheatre.org/2024/07/16/3...

People always need a couple days to fully *believe* it’s warm outside.

I feel like PATH trains smell distinctly different from MTA subway trains, but I don’t know why that would be.

Love that play! It's a bit like "Challengers" minus the tennis

Like you can admire his lines for their erudition if you want to, it’s definitely there, but you can also just eat them like chips.

Listening to a recording of Design For Living and Coward really is the dialogue GOAT, isn’t he? Just carelessly tossing banger after banger over his shoulder like he’ll never run out.

Finally made time to read this, and it's superb. Highly recommended.

Happy to report that MUTE WITNESS hasn’t stopped whipping ass in the however many decades since I last saw it. The whole thing’s fun but the first hour is stunning.

The playful, prolific use of hyperlinks in online journalism (eg Slate, Pitchfork) didn’t anticipate link-rot. Now so many articles are pock-marked with cryptic allusions that some long-dead link once explained. Weird how quickly a new style comes to feel more archaic than the traditional format

Like if after this war abates (in whatever form that’s gonna happen) and Iran is still a theocracy, is Mark Wallace here gonna condemn the Trump Administration for failing their noble mission of liberation? Of fucking course not, he’ll be on to the next thing!

some people see books as entertainment and other people see books as wily enemies to be humiliated, outfoxed, and defeated

Has there been a big “Gen Z or Alpha discovers Dead Poets Society” moment yet? I’d be fascinated to know how younger people feel about it.

What makes me insane is this is the exact same shit they were saying about Iraq: “Why don’t you libs want those people to be liberated?” I don’t understand why this can’t be broadly treated as obviously insincere!

A funny thing about Ethan Hawke’s makeup in Blue Moon is in a few shots it makes him look a lot like Robert Sean Leonard.

The Doors Is So Bad. And The Doors Is So Good. It’s a movie designed to repel and seduce at the same time — and to spin out of control, much like its protagonist.

I hate Oliver Stone’s THE DOORS (1991). I love Oliver Stone’s THE DOORS (1991). These are both the same thing. www.vulture.com/article/is-o...

This was such a good job by the NYT's Shawn McCreesh.

He asked a very pointed and direct question to Trump about the school bombing, leading the president to corner himself (was he claiming the US sold Iran Tomahawks???) before admitting he doesn't "know enough" and will abide by the final report.

It really sucks that the president of the United States is not a reliable source on U.S. foreign policy.

Maybe his words relate to actual policy and maybe they don’t. At many moments, even he doesn’t seem to know.

Throws off so much, and makes large scale coordination virtually impossible.

I am self-employed. Obamacare is how I get insured. My rates doubled this year. DOUBLED. Does our government believe that only people who work for corporations should be allowed to live?

If you get into a “who can cut taxes more” battle with the GOP, you’re going to lose because they are far more shameless and antagonistic to the idea of living in a functioning society.

Don’t concede to their framing that taxes are nothing but a problem to be solved.

If you are watching Trump's presser right now, you are seeing beyond reasonable doubt a person not mentally suited for any position of responsibility. Even running a small store.

GOP members of the House and Senate: You are seeing this too.

my theory of the Harris campaign, which makes exactly nobody happy:

1. she was put in an incredibly deep and arguably insurmountable hole by Biden

2. she made significant errors, largely in not separating herself from him enough

3. her results were still in the upper range of plausible outcomes

I feel like he was also impressed by the Helena actor — Rosalind & Celia in “As You Like It” have the same tall girl / short girl dynamic as Helena & Hermia, and that play was written a few years after “Midsummer,” so likely he wrote Rosalind (his biggest female role) with that actor in mind
