A massive congratulations to my lovely @sharonkennedy.bsky.social on becoming the Team Leader at Penrith Mountain Rescue.
The Penrith Team cover the mountains of the Far Eastern Fells of the Lake District, the western side of the North Pennines, and the River Eden downstream to the Solway Firth.
We've just taken a cancellation on our Mountain Leader training course, April 4th - 9th, here in the Lake District. This was a fully booked course, but there's now one place available. Please share so that we can fill this course again. Many thanks.

Another first for me was this little Wren belting out his song in the same woodland as the Robin. For such a tiny bird they have a massive voice. #birds #birdphotography #spring #birdsseenin2026 #canonphotography #wildlife
We've just added four more places to our Mountain Leader assessment date in September due to filling up.
September 21-25 in the Lake District.

Looking back to our Mountain Leader assessment in the Cairngorms last year. The weather was stunning, we explored some of the more remote parts of the Cairngorms, and all four candidates Passed.
Our May assessment in the Cairngorms has two places.

Lots more learning for our Mountain Leader candidates today as they prepare for their upcoming assessments. Absolutely gorgeous in the sun too, with great views throughout the day of The Dodds, Blencathra, Skiddaw and Helvellyn.

Mistle Thrush by Edmund Fellowes/BTO.
(2/) This feisty and sometimes aggressive species declined by 38% across the UK between 1995 and 2023. Find out some of the possible reasons behind this decline on our BirdFacts page about this species: www.bto.org/learn/ab... #Ornithology #CitizenScience
A singing Mistle Thrush by Edmund Fellowes/BTO.
(1/) The wild song of Mistle Thrush can be heard in many parts of the UK at the moment. This hardy species even has a habit of delivering it during periods of poor weather. Listen to it here: youtu.be/QLT913D3qHw... @btobirds.bsky.social JNCC RSPB Science

Meet the water vole. π
Polluted rivers damage the riverbanks they rely on. Fertilisers and animal waste from farming wash into waterways, reducing the clean water and vegetation wildlife needs. πΏ

A stonker of a Munro day today with Sharon Kennedy. Beinn Sgritheall from Arnisdale. A brilliant mountain and a fabulous walk. We had a great day out, made challenging only by the brutal easterly winds.

A stunning Munro day today above Loch Quoich, and a new one for both of us. Gairich turned out to be a fabulous hill, and it was great to be looking at lots of more familiar mountains all around, all in their winter glory.

Turns out windspeed and direction were both different to the suggested forecast today on Ben Starav. We were struggling to stand upright at just 250m, and decided at 300m that it would just have to wait for another day. Still, it was a very lovely walk nevertheless.

Parked up for the night at Glencoe Mountain Resort and happy to pay the Β£5 asked because, a) it's not a given that you can just expect to park on someone's property, b) it's only Β£5, and c) you'd have to be a real knob not to pay it.
Thanks Glencoe Mountain Resort for allowing overnight parking!
Careful planning and careful route choice given the avalanche conditions saw me, Sharon, Adrian and Matt heading up Ben Lui from Tyndrum on Wednesday. A great day in very varied snow conditions, and not far off a whiteout higher on the hill. Superb!

Feels like a long time since I last visited the tiny island of Easdale, and Sharon had never been, so it was lovely to spend a couple of windswept hours there this morning.

A singing Song Thrush
(1/) Although it is pretty chilly across much of the UK at the moment, many of our resident bird species are already singing! Listen out for the loud, repeated phrases of Song Thrush, especially on sunny days. @btobirds.bsky.social @jncc.bsky.social @rspbscience.bsky.social #Ornithology
Bec du Corbeau and Pointe de Bellevue from Pointe Savolaire a couple of days ago.
Mont de Grange. What a nice looking mountain.
