Reading Feeling at Home by @alvagotby.bsky.social
Really generative immanent critique of the housing justice movement and a great application of social reproduction theory to one of the most urgent political-economic problems rn given the role of homeownership and rents in political formation
Hi Doug! Yes please do get in touch with more details, my email is alva.gotby@gmail.com

It was a pleasure to appear on A is for Architecture, to talk about how domestic design relates to dominant family forms and reproductive labour. Listen here (or wherever you go for podcasts) www.youtube.com/watch?v=3FiV...

Itβs worse than βGaza is being starved and destroyed and no one cares.β Itβs that hundreds of millions *do* care and are powerless to stop it. We need a world where that can never happen, where the masses actually have political power.

A wonderful review of Feeling at Home in @tribunemagazine.bsky.social. It's amazing to have readers who really get what I tried to do in the book, and to see it inform discussions within the housing movement. @versobooks.bsky.social

This feels like one of the most bleak days in a long time. The end of the ceasefire, a new low for the UK government, escalating fascism in the US

Today I had a small role in resisting an eviction, alongside comrades from London Renters Union. It took 7 hours but eventually the police and bailiffs backed down. It's so important to have these moments of practical solidarity and winning together!
Holly Pester has written a lovely and thoughtful review of Feeling at Home (and Holly's novel the Lodgers is wonderful too!)

New book by @alvagotby.bsky.social is out! "They Call It Love: The Politics of Emotional Life" was one of the most insightful reads of 2023 - now Iβm really excited to read "Feeling at Home: Transforming the Politics of Housing" @versobooks.bsky.social
Feeling at Home finally came out this week, published by @versobooks.bsky.social. Itβs about the everyday experience of housing, how different models of home shape our subjectivities, and how we could make a different kind of home together. Pictured here with my research assistant.
London friends, come to the launch of Feeling at Home today at Foyles! I'll be speaking about political meaning of housing and home with the amazing Lola Olufemi. @versobooks.bsky.social www.foyles.co.uk/events/alva-...

If you read my initial post, you'll see I'm arguing that we need rent controls, not that they are included in the bill. In fact the whole point of the article is that the weakness of the bill is that it doesn't include rent controls.
No rent controls (yet) though!
