Driver jailed over Birmingham Eid crash that killed girl, four Javonnie Tavener is sentenced over the crash that killed Mayar Yahia in April 2024.

In England a driver can be speeding, using cannabis and a phone, overtake another vehicle, mount the pavement outside a school playground and kill a 4-year-old girl while uninsured β€” and receive just 3 years 10 months for causing death by careless driving.

There's growing evidence of safety risks of bigger cars.

Heavier with higher bonnets & worse vision, bigger SUVs are:
⚠️14% more likely to kill you than if you're hit by a smaller car
⚠️increasing to 77% for children
⚠️and 200% more likely to kill a kid under 9

Clicked send a bit too quick there... I meant to say invest in a decent *cheap* upper arm one (like a Β£20 Omron), and spend more money on a smart / fitness watch that did the rest of the stuff I was interested in better.

Wrist based blood pressure monitors are never great. There are newer products like hilo that appear to be a bit better, but personally I'd just invest in a decent traditional upper arm based one and spend the money on a decent smart / health tracking watch that I liked

So in an increasingly-unstable world with rising disinformation and propaganda while trusted sources like Radio Free Europe are being attacked … HMG decides to kneecap the World Service.

Well fucking done you utter morons.

One of the 'helping out other teams' things I did in Sudan was being on the interview panel for potential Chevening scholars. All incredibly impressive people that worked really hard to get to that point. To be on the cusp of a huge opportunity and then have it snatched away... Unconscionable.

Wild that 50% of men think they could score against a Premier League keeper, but only 16% think they can run a marathon. Would've thought in reality odds against a pro are near zero, while suspect slightly more could painfully & slowly churn out 26.2 miles if they really had to (although not 50%!)

Apologies for interjecting, but I'm not sure it's a choice thing but partially related to Leeds having better transport links whilst the Ouse silted. York embraced the industrial revolution ( e.g. Rowntree's and Terry's) when the opportunity (i.e. railways) arrived.

Reminds me of growing up in Worksop (Nottinghamshire) in the 90s. A year 9 geography teacher asked my class which county we were in. Over half answered South Yorkshire. For most, coalfields & public transport were a more important division than local government boundaries.

Fuel Duty has been frozen, and therefore cut, for 15 years in the U.K, turbocharging transport emissions and starving local councils of grant funding to repair our crumbling roads.

It’s been a disaster and it’s beyond embarrassing that any mainstream party would campaign to maintain the freeze.

Only a small and comparatively recent element of UK archaeological research is purely academic. Today, the overwhelming majority is conducted within professional archaeology. Meanwhile UK avocational archaeology has 200+ years of national and regional associations, publications, and collections.

Even if we don't get STV or even SV as a result of this, at the very least I hope Labour will finally realise the horror of how badly they've fucked Left Bloc anti-Reform tactical voting. This should be a landslide crushing

9,600 redundancies at just 24 universities. Imagine what the picture is for the sector as a whole. This is the other half of the student loan scandal picture, which has been national news lately. Nothing at all from the government on a key sector effectively in freefall…
