To say that I've been incandescent with rage about this for months now is an understatement. Not only for the abuse/assault/torture that occurred to her as a child, but also for a system that re-victimizes women to make them prove that they were "abused enough" to warrant being granted asylum

Of course they don't believe your word. As if you would make up such a horrific experience? Now, as an adult, you get to re-live the whole thing with an exam and detailed paperwork which will be shared with the legal system. Details about your body made public, questioned at every hearing.

Some time ago a patient and her asylum lawyer requested for me to examine her for FGM. Because apparently explaining how you were tortured as a child, forced to get a procedure that risked death, and subjected to an extreme form of gender discrimination isn't proof enough for immigration courts.
