I’ve been excitedly waiting to share these charts. They're the culmination of a season’s worth of work on understanding pitcher arsenals, how they fit together, and how they impact batters’ pitch recognition. Allow me to introduce you to Baseball Prospectus’s new Arsenal Metrics.
quick take is yes— these metrics should have minimal overlap. but that means grading offspeed stuff without considering velo diffs, which is doable.
i also don't like having to specify “primary” fastballs for stuff calcs. arsenal metrics that evaluate all pitch pairs don't have that requirement.
for @fangraphs.com: i wrote about max fried and the ongoing quest to understand what a pitcher can control
Here’s @lambo.drivelinebaseball.com and @marekramilo.bsky.social’s presentation from saber sem introducing the concepts.
Ultimate goal is using these arsenal models to quantify batter familiarity and pitch buyback effects in order to optimize usage.

if there’s a specific topic you’d like for me or @lambo.drivelinebaseball.com to explain more effectively, happy to do so here.
good a reason as any for me to jump in on bluesky.
