"The 45-second film, made around 1897, was the first appearance on film of what might be called a robot"
HELL. YES.
Crossing off Hollywood's no-longer eligible leading men with a note on the portrait β "Carole Lombard got him", "Married to Barbara".

And that was a terrific listen too!
Excellent- looking forward to it!
The podcast features special guest Brad Schwartz, whose book 'Broadcast Hysteria' has been on my Audible wishlist way too long and I'm finally going to get to it now... I'm pretty sure Zach of @ballyhoorevue.bsky.social recommended it to me back in Twitter days of yore.
This is a fantastic listen! An in-depth look at (and recreation of) the first known "radio scare", courtesy of the 1920s BBC. And my goodness, the stunt was so *very* British...
I second this - and the personal stats (e.g. which actor or director have you been seen most of this year/all time) are fun!
Montage of creative works entering the public domain in the US in 2026.
When the clock strikes midnight on January 1, creative works from 1930 & sound recordings from 1925 will enter the public domain in the US, like:
π Dizzy Dishes, first Betty Boop cartoon
π΅οΈβοΈ First 4 Nancy Drew novels
π The Little Engine That Could
π© Morocco
π Georgia on My Mind
and many more!

This 100%... and just to add, it works if you live alone too. π€©
Agreed, and I'm looking forward to the latest one - saving it for my post-xmas journey home tomorrow. π Being subscribed to Drama on 4 and Archive on 4 on Sounds is a real treat sometimes.
One of my favourite things about xmas these days is the seasonal specials of all my favourite podcasts. @househammerpod.bsky.social up next! ππ§ββοΈπ»
Your Netflix package is about to cost more, and your cinemas will have fewer movies to show, but *jazz hands* Thaaaaatβs Capitalism, Baaaaaby!
I'll be so sad when this technology, along with the magic of linear TV in general (as I still discover so many movies at random and hit record) is fully replaced with a multitude of streaming apps, which is a better experience apparently.
I've found that one of the best ways to see as many classic movies as possible (along with physical media when I can afford it) is keeping an eye on the TV schedules each week. I have 2TB Freesat recorder containing over 300 of films of my own choosing, which doesn't rely on my Internet connection.
@househammerpod.bsky.social should be able to help...
You look amazing!! xx
Channel 4 are now showing about 26 episodes of *Frasier* a week, meaning that the Frasier year is now just over ten weeks long. Thatβs even shorter than a year on Mercury.
Stone cold classic! π’πΉ #Talkingpicturestv
Wow!!
When talkies took over, silent movies were instantly out of style. (Well, over the course of 2-3 years, almost instantly)
Studios quickly remade their silent hits, silent films were recut for dubious comedy. Talkie stars denied ever being in them.
I loved it! I cheered at Blue Washington! I swooned at Jacqueline Logan! And how on earth did Richard Arlen manage to look like a teddy boy in the mid-1920s?? In fact, the hairstyles of that crew seemed to span the whole second half of the 20th century...
Thanks to the #Pordenone Silent Film Festival's 2025 online output, last night I was able to see what @moviessilently.bsky.social was raving about in her review of The Blood Ship. It's marvellous! And a great 1st opportunity for many silent film fans as I think the 2024 Bluray is Region A only.
I second this! @dirtyfeed.org is a fantastic read/resource for UK comedy especially.
Nevermind, I just got in. π₯³
Hmm... I bought my online pass 2 weeks ago, but I can't seem to find my way in to see the first films, even though I'm logged in on that page. I'll wait until tomorrow in case it's a blip, before I start getting worried. π¬
I can't wait! Although every year I manage to get myself lost on that website. π€ͺ Hopefully I'll know where I am once the first film is available... π π©Ά
This is why I am so fussy about silent film restorations, computer colorization and AI.
It took us DECADES to degunk CALIGARI because some mid-century fool changed the aspect ratio.
You never know what is going to survive.
