Regarding cross hatching for example, I can remember being a teenager and thinking about stroke distance, gesture direction according to arm position, now it's just a tool to imply shapes an create cohesive rhythms

That makes perfect sense. And even beyond the money, it's not that easy to be aligned, even with friends. Which can lead to a lot of time and energy wasted
Took me some time to accept that. It was frustrating to have companies which were willing to pay me and not finding someone to have fun with !
One could say that devs are hard to court even working for free. Too much talented ones who can manage to cover all fields of game development themselves
