Oh, I’m not disagreeing with you. I’m a recent engineering school grad and my university has the mech/aero students do their capstones for defense contractors bc they would provide funding. It’s all about money to them — no matter where it comes from
it’s definitely part of it, but I think another part is that there’s virtually no pushback from academia or industry. people either don’t think or care about the societal impacts of their creations and no one is telling them their ideas are at best unnecessary and at worst a danger to society
