Full Committee Markup of Defense and Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education Appropriations Acts | United States Senate Committee on Appropriations United States Senate Committee on Appropriations

πŸ§ͺ Senate appropriators say: NIH's budget gets a... boost!

Rather than 40% cut, NIH gets a $400M *increase* in the Senate committee bill for FY26 (about +1%).

"Congress has your back," said @murray.senate.gov.

ADVOCACY MATTERS! There's still a long road (esp in the House), so keep up pressure.

I’m curious if there are any scientific journals that are running special issues or pieces from scientists who are losing their funding or being fired. It needs to go down on the permanent record for the people who come after us.

The story of ozempic - besides saving millions of lives and saving billions for the healthcare system - ozempic is a scientific breakthrough everybody should know about - it was discovered because someone studied the spit of a lizard that only eats 6 times a year the Gila monster - so first 🧡

This is why all NIH-funded scientists simultaneously trying to diversify their science funding portfolios is not a real solution.

Imagine this: The same young scientists now trying to get into PhD programs, facing reduced admissions and uncertainty over whether labs can take them on due to NIH funding cuts, also survived high school during peak COVID and navigated college through a pandemic. πŸ˜₯πŸ˜’ #standupforscience

Let me tell you as a German - if your reputation is ruined it takes a long, long time to gain trust as a nation again. Germans were for the longest time considered Nazis a priori.
Americans are on the best way to get that experience.

Old friend just laid off by USDA, 1 mos short of his probationary period as senior researcher. Brilliant person who left a tenured faculty position several yrs ago to join USDA. Bright early-career researchers also being laid off. USDA is terminating a generation of highly-qualified scientists.

America will pay dearly for the NIH’s mindless war on wokeness and DEI Colleges, businesses, patients, students, workers, and US excellence will all sufferβ€”and for what?

The cost-saving claims don’t hold up. Every dollar in NIH research grants generates $2.46 in economic activity, research showsβ€”a total of $93 billion in 2023 alone.

β€œIt’s incredible to me that we would give up this thing that has such obvious societal benefits,” says biologist Mark Peifer.

The impact of this wld be enormous.
