Enhanced virulence and stress tolerance are signatures of epidemiologically successful Shigella sonnei Shigellosis is a leading cause of diarrhoeal deaths worldwide, with Shigella sonnei increasingly implicated as a dominant agent. S. sonnei is divided into five monophyletic lineages all sharing a sing...

Finally, we infect human neutrophils and find that lineage 3 has an enhanced tolerance to phagosomal killing - together creating the perfect storm!

Read more about what we think is contributing to the epidemiological success of lineage 3 S. sonnei here: www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

Using a zebrafish model, we show that lineage 3 are more virulent, more likely to disseminate from the infection site and induce a stronger neutrophil response

As promised, part 2 here! 🐟

We found that isolates from the dominant lineage 3 of Shigella sonnei carry fewer genes encoding adhesins and fimbriae, but virulence-associated regions remain highly conserved - pointing towards immune evasion and host restriction

Most Shigella sonnei experimental work relies on a 70yr old lab strain that doesn’t reflect those circulating today - we are excited to share a (soon to be) publicly available set of genomes and isolates to fill that gap!

An exciting part 2 featuring our favourite fish to follow very shortly… 🐟

Certain sublineages of antimicrobial resistant bacteria dominate the surveillance landscape, but what causes them to become resistant? Check out our latest work in Shigella to find out and/or read the thread below www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/2024.10.27.24316207v2
