Should the Maple Leafs rest star players? A hard sell that might help next season As the Leafs ponder the future of the team, shutting down some of their best players for recovery might be the prudent move.

This is from Kloke today. Kind of a no brainer considering the big guys are not merely injured but 100% checked out (and for good reason)

Of course, Berube actually pulling his best players from his lineup feels unlikely.

β€œI told the guys today that until we’re completely out of it, we’re not out of it,” Berube said Saturday.

But many of the steps the Leafs have taken this season have landed them where they don’t want to be: outside of the playoffs. The organization has not been progressive in its approach. The Leafs have relied too heavily on veterans and were left with one of the slower teams in the NHL this season.

General manager Brad Treliving said repeatedly after the trade deadline that there are β€œchanges” the team needs to make. Shifting Toronto’s approach to maximize the remainder of a lost season is the first of many that should be considered.

Have to think that the only way Tre saves *any* job with MLSE is ensuring the team tanks, which means putting whatever pressure he needs to on the coaching staff to rest their star players.

If Berube won’t do it, fire him now (publicly, on the ice if possible) and make his replacement do it.

No bonus for you Tre. No door either. You leave out the window.

I mean, if you're the type of GM to pay this much for Justin Faulk we may not be operating on the same logic, but surely OEL is at least cheaper?

Depending on the return, mabe Kevin Spacey and Jeremy Irons will even give you that nice little "don't let the door hit you on the way out" bonus

Tre in his next job interview: "My biggest strength is protecting my own reputation at the expense of the last team I managed. How many years do you want to sign me for?"

Far be it from me to tell the 5-7th worst GM in the league how do his job managing a 23rd place roster on his way to being fired, but I probably would not let my pride get in the way of acquiring assets for mid-level players that I have no incentive to keep

He has to protect his negotiating reputation. Wouldn't want opponents to be taking advantage of him when he goes back to managing a Boston Pizza

Other people said this is COL. Classic 4D chess by the Pizza Man. Let the Avs load up to put pressure on Dallas and Minnesota to trade for Playoff Guy Scott "Playoff Guy" Laughton.

I’m hearing this more and more around the league. GMs are waking up today from nightmares in which some other team scooped Laughton up before they could get him.

No price is too high for a Guy like him in the playoffs. A 1st? Good luck buddy! 2 1sts? That might get you somewhere. 3 1sts?

A picture of Calle Jarnkrok’s career stats, showing what the Illuminati would have you believe is a 20-goal season with the Leafs in 2022-23.

While not the worst signing ever, Calle Jarnkrok definitely led the Leafs in β€œoh right I forgot he plays for us” per 60 over the last 4 years.

Also there’s no way he scored 20 goals in 2022-23. Bullshit. Cover up. I simply refuse to believe it.

Retain on Carlo and OEL if needed. Keep a slot open for Domi, unless you plan on trading him into a wormhole

I was thinking of the first Roy trade as well but this is very true. Not going to spare the guy a firing because he gets (inflated) FMV at the deadline

Parayko would rather languish in the gutter in St. Louis than play in the playoffs with Buffalo. Brutal. Obviously it’s because Tage Thompson is a J6er but still

To your point from a few days ago, Tre is not bad at executing trades from a position of relative weakness. It’s his overall vision that makes him a subpar GM, which also leads to bad acquisition trades like Carlo and Laughton.

He’d be a fine AGM.

If I'm understanding it, the Leafs cannot suck this year and next, even though the 2027 1st to PHI is top 10 protected. If the 2026 1st is top 5 it slides to 2027, but if the 2027 pick is then top 10, Leafs have to give it to BOS or PHI and then surrender an unprotected 2028 first to the other team

Maybe one of their best players will force his way out of town and reveal that his bitching and moaning was actually the only thing holding up their regular season success?
